Public sector strike set to be largest for a generation

Up to two million public sector workers will stage a strike over pensions from midnight in what is set to be the biggest walkout for a generation.

Schools, hospitals, airports, ports and government offices will be among sites disrupted, as more than 1,000 demonstrations are due across the UK.

It would "achieve nothing", Downing Street said, calling for more talks.

The only thing it will accomplish is pissing people off by all the disruption it will cause and it won't make a bit of difference to the government's plans.

4 Days too late we have already spoken about the public strike, if you decided not to take part in it while it was in General chat then why now?

Media scaremongering. Besides, it is no more than people in the private sector lost in mismanaged pension funds.

Fair enough MD, I'm going to comment on this one though...

The country currently has a £50b a year deficit, this is because the Tories sold out British Industry and Labour created jobs, paying them cash the country didn't have. There are more people in the public sector than the private sector, but all public sector money is generated by the Private sector.

Both sides need to make massive cut backs or the next generation of worked will be entirely ****ed. Something needs to be done, but I understand the public sector worker's anger, why should they suffer whilst others prosper?

A frightening statistic I read was that even if every single piece of private land, house and building was sold in Britain, we'd still be in debt!

Bad explanation from myself there, I do come on the GC at times and what I meant was that some people avoid it as you have to dig through all the **** to find the good threads.

I am aware that there is good debate on here.

Unfortunately it's not scaremongering, a colleague of mine would lose just over 10,000 in the proposed changes.

    No he isn't

Changes to pension, salary and redundancy terms will have this effect on low paid civil servants

And they are low paid....not everyone is a manager with an MBE

Nobody is losing anything. They will have to pay more over the next few years but to say they are losing now is a lie as everything that has been accrued is protected.

And the lowest paid will not have to pay extra anyway.

Not great but at the end of the day public sector workers should contribute to getting the country back on its feet like everybody else.

I've seen the calculations done by the Union rep, I'm sure they cannot make it up.

    Public Sector workers do contribute

They pay tax and NI and don't receive bonuses like the private sector do (managers excluded)

Price rises on EVERYTHING are effectively a pay cut to anyone who has not received a pay rise in 3 years

Cutting the redundancy terms is a cheap way of paying people off

Even thatcher thought these terms were fair

    Pensions increases speak for themselves

No let's all listen to Tory millionaires on how to survive on a pittance

I know public sector workers contribute - I am one so should know really. The point is everyone has to take a bit of a hit at the moment and what's on the table is a lot fairer than is being made out.

Public sector employees have had a 2 year pay freeze increased to 4, expected to now work an additional 3 years before being able to claim their pension, depending on what sector they work in they will have to pay an extra £70 per month for a pension that will be worth £18,000 less. Removal of the final salary pension towards average salary which will affect the longest serving staff most.

All pension funds, both public and private sector, invest in the stock market and the billions wiped off the face value of shares after the utter mis-management by the banking sector has decreased the available pot of money leading to a shortfall.

And at the same time banks are announcing record profits and big businesses are shovelling funds into off-shore accounts to save paying UK taxes.

George Osbourne announced a series of packages yesterday to make it easier to sack employees, charge fees for taking an employer to a tribunal, reduce employment rights and tax breaks to businesses. Don't think that it is just public service employees that are getting shafted, the same will happen to private sector employees too.

The Tories want to deflect blame for not being able to manage the economy on as many scapegoats as possible. First is was the students, then it was protesters at St Pauls now it is anyone who is a public servant. The government wants this strike more than the Unions do, they are more than happy to paint nurses, bin men and prison wardens as the bad guys.

And by the way, all the 2.6million (yeah, reckon) public sector workers going on strike will not be paid for the day. This is a significant saving for the government and will actually have a positive effect on the overall economy.
