If like me, you're quite into your modern architecture, you may be interested to see the plans for the old brewery site. You may of noticed on your last visit to the area that it's looking increasingly like manhattan in that area and below I have linked a press release I stumbled across for proposed plans for the area. Got to say, I really like the look of the new science city and I hope that comes off.

On the one hand it's sad to see history demolished, but I'm excited to see our city progressing and it could become a shiny beacon of 21st century life in the not too distant future.

I'm guessing we will all have differing views on this one, but lets get a discussion going fors and againsts, read on and make up your own minds...

There was also plans for one by the Quayside which was dropped. Newcastle City Council are notorious for dismissing well planned and investment-backed skyscraper projects. Won't happen!

'When complete in around 2023 - 2025 the total floor space of the project will be around 300,000 square meters'

I think it's great! By the time it's finished we'll have won the league, fa cup and champs league several times so no-one will give a **** about it!:) ... and the occupants will get freeview!

Also isn't there a height restriction near the stadium?

Around the stadium, the site mentioned in particular, is the only place tall buildings will get planning permission. But obviously since ne one has any money at the minute don't expect anything to spectacular for a while.

Newcastle is expanding at an alarming rate though, the new library down by the Laing art gallery looks amazing. The outskirts of the city near St James' and towards the Quayside are all being developed. The new Eldon Square looks good too.

Football rivalries aside, Sunderland and Newcastle are worlds apart. Sunderland is shocking, desperate for some government funding.

So true. Newcastle has some really picturesque parts of the city. The bottom of Dean Street with a view of the bridges just clipping the rooftops of the old Georgian buildings and the Milburn House comes to mind first. Sunderland is just an underdeveloped town, strange that it is considered a city.

It all is mate, Blandford Street and Fawcett Street are two of the main streets right in the middle of town and they're full of poundshops, discount food stores and dodgy pubs.

You know how Clayton Street is the ****e end of Newcastle? Most of Sunderland is like that.

I used to park round the brewery and it was a bit of a concrete **** hole so it's good to see some well designed, modern buildings going up. I hope they stear clear of that oxidised copper ****e that seems the current trend a la the life centre and RVI. They seemed to demolish the site in a reverse sequence to how it was built and I remember seeing what must have been the original C1900's brewery. Would have been nice if they retained that as a feature. Strangely they've kept a red brick tower in the middle of the site, any ideas why?

the company i work for have had a hand in the infrastructure work for that particular development. i haven't done any of it myself so i couldn't comment really but the plans look impressive. there was intially a big hoo haa about it being in a flight path and they ended up making it shorter than they wanted to if i remember rightly?
