I've said this many times, it's NOT the supporters who say we are a big club. But Other managers, players etc.
    And here is my proof:

Blaise Matuidi is flattered to be linked with a move to Newcastle, but St Etienne insist they have not been contacted.

Arsenal and Liverpool have been linked with the France international in recent months, but Newcastle look set to push ahead with a move for the 24-year-old.

Matuidi is also attracting attention from the likes of Paris Saint Germain, Lyon and Roma, but he admits England is an appealing prospect.

"I am flatered by the interest from clubs abroad, and I have always loved the Premier League," he said.

"It is the best league in the world, so exicting, and I really want to be part of that one day, however St Etienne has its say about that."

    Rumours
On Newcastle specifically he added: "They are one of the big clubs in England but, like I said, it is all rumours at the moment, but you never know."

St Etienne themselves responded to the Newcastle rumours by releasing a statement confirming no bid has been made.

"To date ASSE [St Etienne] has had no contact with the English club [Newcastle]... the club's management will observe the utmost discretion in the transfer market, and confidentiality is one of those rules for success in this area," it read.

St Etienne, though, did confirm Matuidi's release clause was set at €15million - €13million cash with €2million in add-ons.

This takes me back to the thread a few days back where it was questioned 'How did we get Cabaye?'

Reputation is what Id say <laugh>

I have to wonder whether that means they've had contact from other sources (Arsenal and Liverpool are linked), or whether they're expecting contact from us but will keep it quiet?

As a Liverpool supporter I always see Newcastle as one of the big clubs.

Liverpool, Man Utd, Newcastle, Leeds and Arsenal are all big clubs to me. Then again, I'm probably stuck in the Premier league 10 years ago.

The likes of Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton, Man City would all come below that.

Have to agree here, I think the Prem will soon shape up to the way it was 10years ago, Leeds will be back in a Year or two and the Wigans of this world will be back down the leagues.

We (Newcastle) are a big club in reputation, fan base and global awareness, but 'ON THE PITCH' we've won nowt since 1969.

I'm not into all this 'big club' penis-sizing competition to be honest.

Of course Newcastle is a 'big club'. The stadium and the football team dominates the city and all goings on in and around the club make their way to the national press. Doesn't happen at, say, Bolton (no offence intended)...

Agreed, ther point is I've had people saying "What makes you think you are a big club" and I don't, it's just my club that I support.

A Mackem came on here last week saying how the hell did you sign a player like Cabaye as if we are some new team to the PL who didn't know our arse from are elbows. Point is we are know around the world as a big footballing club after the Keegan (first)era.
