I heard a couple of geeks arguing this one when I worked in an MI department.

One said this was an urban legend, the other that it's true but there's no trace of it because the creators of Dredd would sue.

Robocop is very clearly plagiarised from Dredd - whether the script for one became the other, I don't know.
