I was just thinking about players we almost bought (according to the press) can anyone think of players that we have been close to signing, haven't and then they have gone on to be utter tripe?

Who was it from Leeds we almost signed? Was it Lee Bowyer for some 9 million or something like that?

Yeah it was Bowyer then Rafa (maybe Houllier) came out with he didnt have enough passion to play for Liverpool which I presume was code for he wanted too much money same with Lucas Neil.

Yeah Neil wanted £60k a week which would of been wasted money as Carra would of broke his legs the first day in training. Instead he decided to help West Ham get relegated.

I remember 6 months later he joined West Ham for £500,000 or something like that. Really would have not been value for money.

Would Heinze have been one? I know he went to Real and then Roma but he always seemed a liability to me?

  15. But at the time we desperately needed squad depth at both CB and LB. Heinze would have been a good signing for us at the time. Glad we didn't get him now though <ok>

Ya at the time it was a need but he has just gone downhill since. Chamarkh has to go down as one too.

  17. Yeah, but still, even now, with the benefit of hindsight... Joe Cole or Chamakh...? <laugh>

i think near misses called are fine... the issue is 90% of buys are wish they WERE near misses.

most of the ones mentioned are the best i can think of anyway if i'd vote it'd be probably bowyer cos that was big money. some of the rest were missed frees.

I think Marveaux failed his medical, then went on to Newcastle where he spent most
of his time last season on the treatment table. <laugh>
