Early Morning Notes: Johnson to Sunderland, Martin Jol & Fulham, and Phil Jones to Liverpool.

We’ll get the most ludicrous transfer rumour out of the way first, Jermain Defoe is reported to be a transfer target for Arsenal. No way, never, not in a million years. This appears this morning in the Daily Star however, so you were never in any danger of believing it anyway.

The current asking price for Birmingham‘s Roger Johnson seems to be £14m. Are you sure? Since when do relegated centre-backs command eight figure transfer fees? Ridiculous as that is, Sunderland look even more foolish for seemingly being willing to pay it.

Martin Jol is a candidate for the vacant manager position at Fulham according to the Mirror’s Darren Lewis. We’re not sure how much evidence there is to support this – Lewis’ record for accuracy isn’t exactly 100% – but it would be a nice fit. A mid-level team that would benefit enormously from a motivator above a tactician – Jol is your man. People forget how close he took Tottenham to the Champions League before the days of Bale, Modric, and Harry Redknapp.

Phil Jones is the latest English player to be linked with a move to Liverpool, at the end of a week where Jordan Henderson and Lee Cattermole have also been the subject of supposed interest from Anfield. If i’m a Liverpool fan, i’d be excited about Jones – he’s just a really solid player, and a versatile one. I’d be concerned that the club was apparently thinking of spending close to £30m on Henderson and Cattermole, but swings and roundabouts – Jones has a huge future.

Tottenham are being linked with Mirko Vucinic – although only by the Mirror again. If this was true it would be an early indication that Harry Redknapp has finally recognised the deficiencies of his side – i.e. the forwards. Vucinic is almost like a Frankenstein of Spurs’ three incumbent forwards – work rate of Defoe, the technique of Pavlyuchenko, and the aerial menace – sort of – of Peter Crouch. It would be a bonus for the league if this was true, but remember that the player almost choked when asked previously if he was joining Spurs – he didn’t sound that keen.

I'd like to see us sign him, but it will probably take as much money as it cost us to sign Bent to land him. Although he's never played in the PL, I think he will cope with the step up and of course, if he does turn out to be a success, what price would be on his head? A damn sight more than £10m, that's for sure!

Yes, they are mate, that's why if we want him, we'll have to go in around the £10m mark. I can see a bidding war developing for his signature....
