Disagree on the disruption - one person, same role does not seem that disruptive to me. And, if somebody is going to sneer and be dismissive, why not say why constructively and avoid the sarcasm.
It's a great problem for the manager. Montero has set the standard for crossing and will force his way into the team at some point. However, Dyer and Routledge are playing well at the moment and will probably be first choice until one gets a niggle. Dyer also offers us an outlet from defensive situations as over the years Vorm and now Fabianski kick long to him, so of the three he is probably the more influential in a game. As Pembs said, one hell of a selection headache , but over the course of the season I feel all three will be equally important to us.
The problem with this also is that wing play can only be played on the wings where there is more space hugging the touchline, for wingers to sprint, IE Monty, Bale, Dyer, atc, you do not have that same space in front of the box going up mid field in my view, it's a different type of player sitting behind the striker like Siggy, Bodde, Gomez, Mitchu etc!....................
I think you're not taking all of his skills into account and the degree of flexibility he might have in applying them. He's a proven international and world cup player. He just may be adaptable - we've only seen him playing out wide. He plays on the wing as a traditional winger. Maybe he could play a different role and apply his speed and skills in a different way. Nobody would have thought of playing Pablo in the #10 role, but he played it his way and did a pretty decent job of it. If Routledge can be considered as a #10 stand-in then I don't see why Montero couldn't have that same flexibility.
Not only that he is our top goal scorer this season, and you do not drop your top scorer, so if Monty is to get some league starts which he inevitably will, then Routledge is the likeliest to be dropped, though it's a very tough call for Monk!..............
Yes but Routledge doesn't have the pace of Monty or Dyer, it would be a waste of quality wingers to bring them into the number 10 role, not to mention the fact that it would be criminal to do this to such a gifted No 10 as Siggy is!............
Yep, which means Montero is likely to stay on the bench for the foreseeable future. Let's just hope he shows the other lads how to cross
Interesting point Phil regarding pace. I don't see Monty as an out and out speedster. Of the three he appears to be the slowest - but he has that ability to hold onto the ball and out psyche his man and then deliver an outstanding cross. We'll have to get Monk to arrange a race at half time to see who is the fastest. Better than watching Cyril! (No betting of course )
Agree that Monty is not in Dyers ball park regarding speed, but I think he would out run Routledge!...............
Taking Sigurdsson out of the #10 position WOULD be a massive disruption. He's made for that position and he fits in extremely well for the Swans. So if you keep Sigurddson, where would Montero play? Surely not deeper than the #10, so I can't see anyway of getting him in the team. Btw where was the sneering and sarcasm in my earlier post? I genuinely didn't understand where you were coming from in your comment. That's all I was saying. No need for you to be a drama queen!
A lot is said of Montero's pace but I'd like to see some stats. In short bursts and when turning a player he's devastating but in a straight race he didn't seem to be that quick compared to the Everton midfield / defence.
Wingers don't have to be balls out fast over distance. The best go from dead stop to flat out in a stride or two and get the space they need to change direction or hit the cross .... and of course, he can do it with the ball.
Absolutely. I suppose my point is Dyer is lighting fast over all distances after the first 4 strides (and is getting better at beating defender), Routledge has even speed and the ability to make the most of space (pushing the ball behind a player to turn him or picking the right line), Montero is like the proverbial off a shovel and beats players for fun which gives him space. = three excellent wingers all with different qualities.
