Martin O'Neill has ruled himself out of contention for the Northern Ireland manager's job.

The former Aston Villa and Celtic boss had been linked to the post after Nigel Worthington quit following Tuesday's 3-0 defeat by Italy.

O'Neill told BBC Radio Ulster he wanted to return to club management in the near future.

Shamrock Rovers boss Michael O'Neill, ex-QPR manager Jim Magilton and Iain Dowie have been linked with the job.

Martin O'Neill, a former Northern Ireland captain, has not been involved in management since resigning as Aston Villa manager in August 2010.

The former Nottingham Forest star was capped 64 times for his country between 1971 and 1984.

O'Neill, 59, said he had not been approached by the Irish Football Association.

He added that he would not dismiss the possibility of accepting the Northern Ireland manager's job at a later stage in his career.

Thought he may have taken the Ireland job...

Guess it doesn't pay enough to rub his over inflated ego.

Clear that he is ready to return to club management. if the Sunderland job came up why wouldn't he come? premier league club, great stadium great crowd, wealthy owner. Everythings there for a good manager like Mon to take us to the next level. What better jobs may be available in the next year?
Arsenal; don't think they'd fancy oneil. be someone like ancellotti or guardiola if he packs barca in
Spurs; maybe if harry gets the England job
Everton; Can't see it interesting him

Its not a dislike, per se, just don't think he is what we need.

Personally i think he's by far and away the best 'realistic' option there is.

Id even have him before some of the far fetched names mentioned like benitez, van basten, ancellotti.

Why do you not think he's not what we need? Imo what we need is a manager to come in and take us to the next level and he has a proven track record of doing that.

IF we get rid of Bruce we need someone who can get the best out of the squad we have - even if we have a shedload of money from the chairman (and that's not a given) we are in a bad place if we need to churn the squad YET AGAIN in January.

    It's Bruce's squad. It's his job I'm afraid.

I have always said, he should have gone in May. I'd have had O'Neill then. Not now.

What manager worth his salt is going to put his reputation on the line for a hyper-critical mob like us? Especially if we are still bottom 5 - or worse.

Yeah its Bruces squad so he is culpable for its failure, be it short term or long.

The longer Bruce spends with any of his squads at SAFC there is a pattern of decline.

MON is by no means perfect, but is a step up from what is present already.

I don't think we are a hyper critical mob at all. We are amongst the best fans in the country. Even during dire time weve still pulled in the 5th or 6th highest crowds in the country.

I can't shake the feeling that we are doomed if Bruce stays around.

if a pilot loses control of his aircraft you wouldnt just let it crash if someone else could take the controls and guide it to safety
