I know you dont want one but it would be good if you had one, not for disputes but for housekeeping, looking after the board, reading the mods board to have an input and keep abreast of things. Talk it over and if you decide yes ket me know who
its no bother mate, just thought you may like one of your own looking after things. if all boards where like this one life would be sweet
Thanks cyprussyd, for taking the time and the kind comment. I'm sure the Board will reflect on what you say, although I'm with Bidley and our continuing to "self-regulate".
Well, we certainly don't need a mod for internal disputes. As we've shown this year, we're quite capable of raising problems, discussing them and dealing with them. The fact that most people on this board are quite prepared to apologise when they get called on something says a lot for us. I don't think that having a mod will make a huge difference to that. I'm still unsure how much help having a mod will be for dealing with any problematic fans of other clubs, but I can see that it might help to keep us in touch with what's going on with the wider Not606 site. I'm coming round to the idea that maybe Syd's right and we should have one. As I say, I'm not convinced, but I'm moving in that direction. I don't think the mod should be (or would be allowed to be) a great dictator, laying down the law. Rather the mod (or mods - two would be better than one) would be more like convenors when there's something that needs talking over, making sure that site issues get addressed and working towards a concensus between those of us who use the site regularly. And (although Manobear was joking) I don't think it's time for people to start saying, 'I'll do it' or 'I think thingy should do it'. It would be better to discuss what qualities we want in our mods then think about who is the best fit. Then see if they can be persuaded to do it! All that, of course, is if we decide we want to go down the mod route. What does everyone else think?
Thinking about it, I suppose we can only benefit from having mod(s), if not for swinging the banhammer then for the housekeeping side of things. I still wouldn't lose much sleep if we didn't decide to have one, but like Captain says, it would help us keep up with the rest of the site and probably progress our board for the better. I daresay the only reason we wouldn't have one would be because of stoic traditionalism (not a criticism, a compliment if anything). I agree with the 'mod team' thought too. Most forums I've been involved have worked far better with a group operating behind the scenes, rather than one person to rule them all. The mods would also have an equal as a sounding board. Our board isn't big or busy enough to warrant two people to keep up with stuff like spam, trolls/wums and stickied requests, but it's a good idea because there's more chance of a mod being online if something does need sorting.
We don't want a dictator, but someone who is part of the community and is happy to engage and discuss maturely with the rest of us. I think the ability to communicate effectively is very important in a mod: maybe someone who has written a book of some kind?
I agree about the ability to communicate, and lots of us on here have that. As for the book, stop being cheeky, Surly (although digital copies are still available via Amazon and iTunes. Just saying). I think another important quality is that the mod(s) shouldn't be someone who tends to fly off the handle and get into rows with people. (S)he shouldn't be someone who gets prickly and aggressive when someone is disagreeing with them.
Although I really like the fact that we (as acknowledged by Cypressyd) don't need a mod because we are civilised Fulham fans if he feels we need one from a housekeeping point of view and if it makes his life easier then maybe we shouldn't hold out any longer? As for the candidate - although, as discussed, the mod is not a dictator they will be a leader of sorts. So someone with some sort of leadrerish rank in their name would seem ideal....?
(Sigh). Is anyone going to engage seriously about what the mods should be like, rather than just making veiled references to wanting me to do it? I'm flattered and everything, but I'm sure that some people are reading this and thinking that I'm just what they don't want. There are people on the board that I would be happy to see do it, and others that I think would be wrong for the role. Some of the ones I wouldn't want as mod are posters whose comments I enjoy and who I think of as my friends in the context of the site, it's not that I don't like them. The only way to not make this feel personal is to discuss what - not who - we are looking for first, then see who fits.
Sorry Cap'n, couldn't resist prolonging the gag! I agree with pretty much everything everyone has said, so unfortunately I can't add anything helpful other than 'witty' remarks! We could do with a few more oars being dipped in - I'm sure they'll come.
