Cash used to have a big say in it too - I knew a lad who was on the books at Boro as a 17 year old. Came to work for us (talking around 10 year ago) whilst he was training with them. Saw him play alongside Johnson and Downing and others at that level and he was a better footballer than most - 3 of them made it to the first team. He never got picked. His parents were working class and didn't have 10 pence to rub together - Johnson and Downing's parents were loaded and could afford anything - they played, my mate Chris didn't! - Did his ACL in a pub game around 6 weeks after being let go by Boro and hasn't kicked a ball at 11 a side since! Chance has little to do with it (but sometimes can be useful) but it used to years ago. Hard work, dedication and money are what talks. Although this was before the massive money that's around nowadays so it may be different!
