Simon Mignolet's agent has denied claims his client is looking to leave Sunderland this summer.

In reports published on Thursday, former Huddersfield goalkeeper Nico Vaesen was incorrectly cited as the player's representative. Vaesen had suggested that Mignolet would be keen to step up a level due to his ambitions with the Belgium national team but the 25-year-old's actual agent, Guy Vandersmissen, has refuted such claims.

Attempting to provide clarity to the situation, Vandersmissen told ESPN: "Nico played at Huddersfield and the manager was Steve Bruce and that was the contact. Steve Bruce asked him for the goalkeepers and he proposed Simon Mignolet, but that does not mean he is the agent of Simon Mignolet.

"I am the representative of Simon Mignolet. Simon is my player, I've been working with Simon since he was 16 years old. At this moment there are some clubs who are interested.

"For a lot of players there are some clubs interested but Simon still has a two-year contract in Sunderland, so we depend on the position that Sunderland is taking in relationship to an eventual transfer of Simon Mignolet."

Understood to be happy on Wearside, the former Sint-Truiden goalkeeper was widely considered one of Sunderland's best players as they narrowly avoided relegation last season. Having been linked with a move to both Arsenal and Liverpool recently, Vandersmissen insists Mignolet is happy to honour his Black Cats contract and reassess the situation at a later date.

"There is a contract so we have to respect the contract," he explained. "But I don't think at this moment we would be prepared to sign a new contract. When there is a new contract the team can block a player [from moving]. There is another two years on his contract, if they want us to stick to that, we will stick to that and perhaps leave after two years if there is an interest in Simon.

"Should they say now we are prepared to discuss [a new contract in two years] we must be prepared to discuss the option. If they want to make a proposal to Simon, they should come up with a decent proposal and we will then have a look at it.

"I would say four or five months ago we talked but the situation for Sunderland was not that good. It was not clear that they would have enough quality to stay in the Premiership so it was not the right moment to discuss or sign a new contract because we didn't want to start up in the Championship next season."

And there is the issue in red. If he wont sign a new contract then he will have to sold as if we wait another 18 months, he will be free to start negotiations a year come January to go for nothing when he is valued at £15m now. Even if we sell next summer it will be for buttons compared to what we should be able to command now. We should offer the new contract (5 years min) now and if he wont sign it we should sell him immediately and use the money for the good of the club long term.

true, but nowhere does it say he wont sign a new contract, unlike that idiot GK who the press thought was his agent.

It wont hurt him to sign a 1 to 2 year extension on higher wages, especially if he does intend stay at sunderland until 2015 anyway. Stick a buy out clause in there, and both SAFC and Mig are winners.

I wouldn't actually lose too much sleep if the Mig moves on...............he dropped a couple of grade A howlers last season and does not have the physical presence in the box a great keeper has.

Needs to be sorted sooner than later.
