And unless he is going to form a Ltd Company or hide behind TRASH, Rovers should attempt to recover direct costs of employing an expert and delays to the build time of the stadium.

the more i read and hear about this the more i think we really have nothing to worry about apart from just some time being wasted and the consequences of that time being wasted.

end of the day, the fact is the gates is only listed as a war memorial not the ground. that is why an application has now been made to get the whole land rigistered as a war memorial because thats what it should have been instead of just the gates.

if i thought that was the only reason why this person made the application to english heritage then fair enough. i could understand and respect that.

however we all know the reason why this person has made the application. he has even admitted it himself.

regardless of what he is saying, if its right or wrong, he dont actually care and i severely doubt that he has even been to the mem to pay his respects on remembrance day. we all know his real motives. he has even admitted it himself.

he supports TRASH. he waited until TRASH lost to come out and make a petition about this. that is all on the TRASH very own website. he has in the last few days been quoted to say that he is anti supermarket and believes gloucester road will be lost due to sainsburys.

he is just doing his best to delay things as long as he could. he could have came out much earlier with this during the planning permission if he felt so strong about it. but he waited until it was over for TRASH and then came out.

everyone should be disgusted by his actions using war dead to hide behind to stop a supermarket in order to protect gloucester road.

that is his motive and its sick and twisted. he has gone against the royal british legion, current bristol rugby officials, ex bristol rugby officials, current and ex military as well as going against english heritage themselves - all who were consulted during the planning process and all gave their support as they all thought that a memorial garden with sainsburys is a much better tribute than a run down stadium with not fit for purpose facilities.

again if the only reason why this person made the application to english heritage was due his belief that the whole site should be a war memorial then fair enough. but its not and he admits this himself. its disgusting and he should be ashamed and i cant believe that there would be people who would back him.

so english heritage has previously been supportive of sainsburys, but if somehow english heritage did change their mind and has got the power to stop things then they will need to demolish all the houses that has been built on the land what wasnt opposed, demolish the car park and all the stands what wasnt opposed, in order to put it all back to the original state when the covenant was 1st done when the land was given to bristol rugby. none of which will actually happen.

remember mind during the whole planning process, TRASH was giving a lot of ideas on what should be built on the land instead of sainsburys. schools were mentioned for example. not once did they come out about nothing should be built on the land. so why now??

because its just delay tactics and thats all it is. surely the appropriate people will see sense and it will be over soon.

im just very saddened that someone would stoop that low and use the war dead to hide behind in order to pursue his real motive which is to save gloucester road. just sick.

Yes I just heard :)

Now await the appeal which will be made on the last day possible. Which will then get refused.

Then await the appeal to that which will be made on the last day possible. which will get refused.

etc....

etc....

However that is a good start though! And a fast response too.

<doh> there is a bug in the system at the moment. some links to other sites are automatically turning into not606.com! one minute you can the proper link, next time its turned into default not606.com. the way around it is if i edit the comment but not actually change anything and then the proper link re-appears. you should be able to see it now <ok>

Reasons for not Listing the site...

The Bristol Rugby Memorial Ground (also known as the Memorial Stadium), dating from 1921 and substantially rebuilt from the late 1980s onwards, is not listed for the following principal reasons:

Level of survival: the original stand and related structures of 1921 have been lost (except for the entrance gate piers and gates, which are already listed at Grade II).

Architectural interest: the replacement stands dating from the late 1980s onwards do not display sufficient levels of innovation in their design, and lack the degree of architectural or technological interest needed to merit listing.

Historic interest: its historic interest as a sports ground or stadium lies on a local rather than national level. Its historic interest as a war memorial ground is appropriately acknowledged by the designated Gate Piers and Gates (listed at Grade II).

Reading details section in that link says that apart from the gates that are already listed, only the pitch itself is in its original position. Everything else has either been demolished and rebuilt in the 1980's & 90's and new things built and added. And even the pitch has been dug up in the late 90's in order to install new drainage so even though the pitch is in its original position is still been renewed and modernised. The gates alone had been untouched and that is why its already been listed as nothing else on the proposed site as anything worth being listed.

Mr Carstairs (the applicant) was on Radio Bristol this morning. (Taken from the Post)

The 55-year-old was a supporter of TRASHorfield. He said:
“In the 1920s, the people of Bristol donated enough money to pay for the construction works and the equipping of the Memorial Ground. People paid for an asset for the use of the community. It is a significant heritage site – and a very special war memorial created, in a moment of genius, as a sports ground. Is it right or respectful to build a supermarket on a war memorial? How did this community asset in Horfield become a bargaining chip for businessmen and planners? The redevelopment plans include a small ‘memorial garden’ around the entrance gates. This is a token gesture, which misunderstands the point of the memorialisation. A Sainsbury’s superstore and a huge car park are unsuitable memorials to sacrifice. It is shameful to Bristol that this bad idea was ever entertained.”

An English Heritage spokesman said:
“We carefully considered an application to list Bristol Rovers home ground, known as The Memorial Grounds. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport agreed with our advice that it does not have the architectural or historic interest to merit listing at a national level."

Good. Always a delaying tactic, and a shameful one too - using the memory of the fallen as a tool to stop a supermarket being built.

A nasty, desperate bunch these TRASH types. I'd be glad to see the back of the hypocritical, lying scumbags.

To be honest communities have donated money for all sorts of things which are no longer there... particularly memorial hospitals...why not find a home for the gates at the new ground? They would look pretty cool if they were planned into the site...
