When I was a kid growing up the league was made up of players from the home nations.

Mind you there was some talent, Billy Bremmner, Peter Lorimer, John Tosack, Johnny Giles and so on.

A forgein player was someone one you watched on TV when the world cup came around.

My big first world cup star I saw at SJP was when Eusebio came over with Benfica for a friendly.

Now the league is a melting pot with players from France, Spain, Argentina ,Ghana, Ivory Coast and a few more.

I love to see the forgein players and we have seen some great ones and they have been great for English football but I also worry that some great British talent is slipping through our fingers

    Your thoughts.

    Showing your age :emoticon-0105-wink:

I do love the foreign players, alot of my favourite players have been overseas ones, but there is nothing better than discovering a brilliant British talent!

P.S. From what I've seen, Eusebio was class.

Like I said I was a kid when Euesbio came to SJP but it was just brilliant.

He was a great player but at the 66 world cup was kicked of the field and wasnt aloud to show his skill.

Either way, jealous mate, great player.

If you havent seen these they are worth a watch (where i saw most of what i know about Eusabio), 'Football's Greatest' a series of half hour programmes about some of the best to ever play the game! Really interesting, you get to know about them, see interviews with team mates and themselves (if alive), and of course it shows you endless footage.

    Well worth a look.

Everything about football at the top professional levels has moved on so much since even the 70's, the pitches are paradise compared to the mudbaths or frozen tundra that existed then, the balls are so much lighter and responsive, the players are far fitter, more athletic and technically better in general than their counterparts 40 years ago. I doubt that the average professional players from the 70's in the old First Division would be able to compete at Premier League level, there was always the elite few as there are now who played at international level who may have the skills and technique but not the fitness and athletical ability.

Thought ToonSi might have known him with being at Leeds Uni. Was asking him about it the other night when we were shut down by the madman.

The influx of foreign players that the modern game has seen must have had some impact. Then again, if a player is good enough he'll make it... right?

Man City always strike me as a culprit when it comes to developing players from their youth system into the 1st team squad. Especially since their big money takeover, they seem to go around other clubs and cherry pick the best talent simply because they've got money to burn. I could be showing my ignorance here, but thats certainly how it looks from the outside.

Mind you - did Joe Hart come up through the ranks?

If they have any ambition they will at least have a youtube channel. God knows though, some folk are thick these days!

On a separate note, because I'm sad, i checked the member list, and clicked on 'reputation' to see who the most repped people on the forum are. On the first page (30 folk) there are 2 mackems, and 28 of us!! #Winning
