Not a position he is unfamiliar with it seems. http://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/paul-abbandonato-gary-medel-could-6510373 What do we think
He's played CB for Chile on a number of occassions, including during the last international break. I commented at the time that at 5' 7" he must be one of the shortest international CBs around.
Depends who we are playing and how we play. If a lone striker who is not the biggest then it should work but if 2 strikers who are on the large size, e.g. Palarse, then 2 "proper" cb's needed. Also, we would need other outfield players of greater stature to defend at corners and other set pieces when the opposition will bring their heavy artillery forward. I thought West Ham might have caught us out on this with half a dozen 6ft plus players and only our 2 cb's and KTC at 6 ft+ - Mutch has been useful in this but wasn't playing of course. As it happens that wasn't our problem on the day and Medel actually won 2 or 3 headers from set pieces. I wonder why he gets subbed so often at the 60/70 minute mark. Surely he is fit for 90 minutes? Is he puffing on 20 Woodbines behind the bike sheds after training each day? Or is the defensive midfield role too much for him and playing at cb means he doesn't have to cover so much ground?
