McGoldrick only has a year left on his contract and he missed a lot of last season, so I'm not sure how high Derby will bid. Out of our strikers, I thought McGoldrick is the likeliest to leave. He is technically one of our best players, particularly with regards to his goalscoring and dribbling skills. However, Murphy and Sears struck up a prolific partnership last season and look likeliest to start together if we continue to play two up front. We've brought in Pitman and I viewed that as a sign that one of our strikers would be sold. Despite having a year left on his contract, I think a sum of £4-5m isn't an unfair demand.
I would like to see McGoldrick play just behind the front 2 as I believe that is his most effective position. Not surprised however if he does move on so long as we get a decent fee for him!
I don't want to see him go just as we are putting together a squad of predominately tried and proven players at the level we play at, I know McG missed great chunks of the last two seasons but he is the best front player we have when it comes to football skills and a proven goal scorer, that's why Derby want him. Even if he didn't start can you imagine how the opposition must feel if one of our strikers goes off only to see McG come on to take his place? Unless its mega money for Christs sake hang on to him Mick.
If we aren't going to offer him a new contract and the offer is good then we should sell before letting him walk for free. As much as I want us to keep our best players I would be more annoyed if we just let his contract run down. Saying that, it doesn't seem like a good idea to sell to another championship club, making us weaker and them stronger.
" Grow a pair Mick and stop our best players being sold off!! " Yes because it's that simple - we lose £8 mill a season at the minute roughly. Mings sale very useful as is the Cresswell £££. I don't think for one second Mick wants to sell anyone, however, isn't it refreshing under Mick we are receiving decent transfer fees for players unlike the last three..... To be honest I'd cash in for anything upwards of £3.5 mill. Rumours are his family is unhappy, he has 1 year left and is very injury prone. Class player but may be best all around. If he stays, and is fit for the season then of course I'm happy with that also. Quality when properly fit.
I think you've got that one about right Westy, its good to see MM actually generating income from the sale of players and mega money is hard to turn down for any of our team, I still hope he stays though.
I think we should've sold him last season to be honest, £8 million from Leicester, should have bitten their hands off. Clearly a talented player but had a poor season last year, I felt Murphy and Sears looked fair more cohesive as a pair and more balanced. I've found when McGoldrick is in the team although he's our best ball player we look disjointed because there always seems to be a distance between himself and the other forward. I don't think he's suited to a flat 2 upfront, as JWM said think he'd be more effective in a 3. I get the feeling we will sell him actually. He's been injury prone, last year wasn't on great form. I feel Pittman is his replacement. We currently have 4 decent strikers but I feel we need 1 more in the target man mould because if Murphy gets injured we're screwed given our direct style and we can't afford to have 5 senior strikers on board (plus Varney if he comes back)
Exactly Weighty. If we don't have a target man up front we're not likely to just lump the ball forward are we? I think Mick has been managing long enough to know that and would change 'our style' (whatever the hell that is) accordingly.
There were plenty of instances last season when Murphy wasn't on the pitch and the default ball from our back four was still to knock it long.
I think we would have to change our play if Murphy wasn't playing but as Big Al said we didn't last year when he wasn't we still looked to go long. Even if we were a good passing team and weren't quite so direct I still feel you need a focal point in attack to have that outlet and to lead the line, without Murphy we don't have that. Which is why I think perhaps there is some truth in McG rumours
My friend went to the Dublin friendly yesterday and told me McGoldrick is very likely to move on. He wants to move back to the Midlands, his family are desperate to move too and he doesn't want to sign a new deal.
If McG has said that he wont sign a new deal then get him out the door asap, I don't particularly want him to go but if hes that unhappy here and maybe getting family pressure to move then we wont get a player who will give 100%. ITFC comes first.
Sooner he goes for a good fee the happier I will be - sounds awful as he's class for us but it's when fit. Very expensive wages for someone potentially out for 5/6 months a season!
As I rermember McG was on loan at Coventry and out of contract at his parent club at the end of that season, nobody else was interested in him but we come along and MM gets him playing well enough to become an Irish international and stand by him when hes had two long term injuries, now if rumours are true he says hes not happy here. Christ you couldn't make it up.
I remember it a little differently Fieldmarshall - he was banging them in for fun at Coventry and I've no idea why it appeared other clubs didn't come in for him. Certainly our gain! Especially on a free. We did turn down a bid bigger than the reported £7/8 mill last summer for him - he was even at Leicester trying to sort it out before we said no late on! He's been with us 2.5 years, which is quite a long time for a pro - if he wants to go back for various reasons, I hold no grudge.
