Sunderland reserve team manager Keith Bertschin believes there's much more to come from midfielder James McClean. The 22 year-old, who recently signed a contract to keep him at Sunderland until summer 2015, kicked off his Black Cats career lining up for Bertschin's reserve side. The former Derry man made 11 appearances for Sunderland's second string, scoring two goals. During that time, Bertschin was impressed with how keen McClean was to learn and his pleased to see how that has been rewarded with a regular place in the first team. Bertschin said: "If James McClean can remain as humble and excited as he has been, he has a good future ahead of him. "It's ok to be quietly confident but he's well aware that any player can be one game away from a disaster. "He's a sound boy and he's got a wonderful work ethic - he's constantly gaining in experience and in confidence. McClean has already amassed 23 appearances for the first team, having only made his debut in mid-December, notching five goals in those games. "Like anybody else he will go up and down form wise," Bertschin continued. "There will be the odd game where he'll be disappointed at his own performance, but he has had a key role in the resurgence of the team under Martin O'Neill. "When you talk about a player taking opportunities when they come, he is a great example of a footballer doing just that. "Not long ago he was playing for Derry, he came over, showed he wanted to learn and wanted to work and was soon elevated into the first team picture. "He's learning every week and I think there's definitely more to come from With a pre season under him,and a steep learning curve im expecting big things from the lad next season as he has more experience under his belt.
