Always enjoy these when result is good. Seemed more links and friendships than usual between the 2 sides. Mourinho asking if Sammy was taller<laugh> Interesting to hear that Martin Tyler's first commentary was at the Dell 40 years ago.

Do you remember Southern Soccer, transmitted the day after the match..? That pre-dated ITV's national coverage [and Tyler]. I was only thinking last night who used to commentate on that one. Think it was Gerald Sinstadt, mostly.

EDIT: Nope. Looked it up and I'm wrong, so if anyone has any idea, do say.

Another EDIT: Here's the answer. Look where Martin Tyler comes in:

I remember Southern Soccer very well TSS, very often the only chance you got to see Saints on TV in those days. Another commentator from those days on the BBC South and West regions was Idwal Robling, who actually won a competition to be a commentator for the 1970 World Cup. Him and Ian St. John were the final two, whittled down from 10,000 entrants. Sir Alf Ramsay picked Robling over the Scotsman who ended up on ITV.

Just had an old zap of memory. Weren't those Southern Soccer programmes an hour long, with only one break for adverts at HT, and no studio punditry to get in the way of the action..? Not a bad substitute for those who missed the game the previous day.
