I'm in my local cafe and it turns out that ex-footballer Martyn King is here. Apparently he played for Colchester United in the 60s. Anybody know much about him?
Turns out he's te highest ever goalscorer for Colchester. Mind you that isn't that hard at Colchester!
i thought you meant Marlon King why don't you post a thread on the Col Who board Wonky, you might get a reply next week
Info on Martyn King, he scored his very 1st league goal for Colchester against NORWICH at Carrow Rd in '56. Went on to make 227 league and cup appearances scoring a total of 139 goals.
Thanks Monarch. Cafe owner was delighted to have what she called a 'legend' in her cafe. Seemed like a nice bloke and nice to see an ex-footballer who didn't earn thousands of pounds and isn't arrogant like a lot of today's footballers. Also, any other info you could give on him please as the cafe owner would really appreciate it.
Wonky, bit more info, after signing for ColU, Martyn got called up for his national service with the RAF, during his 2 years NS he managed to miss only 12 games. He left Colchester for Wrexham in a player plus cash deal in '65, he only played 45 games for Wrexham scoring 13 goals. After retiring from football he took up teaching and spent many years at Earls Colne Grammar School. He still holds the record for scoring Colchesters quickest ever goal (24 seconds) he went onto score a hat-trick in a 3-0 win against ?????? NORWICH. Hope this gets you a free bacon butty.
