Do not forget that in the past one Watford manager was removed because of shady dealings in the transfer market.
No NNW, Neil Mcbain was the manager at the time that Cliff signed, although he claimed to know nothing about it until he was asked to have his picture taken at the signing ceremony. He was replaced during the season by Ron Burgess who claimed that he had little say as Cliff was running the whole show.
Totally agree with that. He did well for us, but not sure whether the hoof started to bother me before the mouth did, or the other way round. His departure wasn't mourned here. Never liked the way BR presented himself on TV. Shifty, somehow. That was what I thought before he ratted on us, so it's not wisdom after the event. Malky, to me, comes across as a completely straightup sort of guy. To be fair, AB did. And Ray Lewington. On the whole we can't complain too much about our managers over the past ten years or so.* Had some dodgy moments in between the two GT reigns though. Harry Bassett, anyone? On the subject of mouth, does anyone else get embarrassed by GT's punditry? the man may well a living god, but he doesn't half mangle the English language these days. *edit: curses, forgot about that Italian bloke.
Watching him last night I thought he looked like a heart attack waiting to happen, more so than usual.
Did a bit of research, and I'd say there were two. In the Who's Who by Trefor Jones, it strongly implies that McBain, in his first spell, was the best manager between Harry Kent and Bill McGarry, but then says he was sacked for "an unusual approach to cash handling". You can't libel the dead, so I'm going to assume that's a euphemism for "caught red-handed, and decided accepting the sack without compensation or comment was better than an FA investigation."
I do not remember McBain in his first spell , not old enough, but I do remember him coming back, heralded as one of our best. He was a huge disappointment and reports say that by that time he was having an intense affair with the bottle.
According to my book Huddersfield won in 24,25,and 26. Arsenal in33,34,35 so that 2 hat tricks for Herbert!!
Only partially true - Chapman wasn't in charge of Huddersfield when they won the title in 1926 - he'd already left for Arsenal. And when Arsenal won the title in 1935, Chapman had already died.
So did you see either of these teams then BB???!!!!!!.. Maybe you were with Frenchie on the Somme!!!!!!!!!
It's called 'learning at your daddy's knee' - mine was a pro-footballer who liked football statistics/stories & used to relay them us all the time. As to being on the Somme - no! The nearest I came to that was having a grandfather at Galipolli.
