Where is Bacetic? What kind of injury keeps a young player out for almost a year? It wasn’t an ACL, adductor injury we were told. I wonder what is going on because we sure could use him now

In January the word was maybe back in training in February. I don't think I've heard anything recently though. He surely must be back soon though.

"Growing pains"/ the website just says "Fitness issue". Maybe his body just can't hack it right now.

shin splints and such are "a thing" there is no way klopp had him along for the league cup with the squad for no reason.

Just happened couple bits from BBC Gravenberch out but made to sound he could be back relatively soonish may have seen last of Thiago and the Bajetic comment come across a bit odd

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on Thiago Alcantara's fitness: "No timescale [for his return]. I don't know [if he will play again this season]. There are things he has to do now, but it is not a short term thing. He will not be training in the next couple of weeks.

On Stefan Bajcetic:"He's gaining fitness now, running around, but he didn't get the green light for team training. No one wants to hold him back, so there must be a reason why he doesn't have the green light."

Be a shame if that’s the last of both thiago and Matip.

Not sure if merits of giving them new contracts unless was massively reduced wage and injury clauses. Otherwise just hampering development of the younger players plus will be a new manager so would need to see if fit their ideas.

Be real shame for Matip given he was one of the first (if not the first) signing and has been an absolute rock when played for us. Will miss his runs forward

Gravenberch: "What I know is that Ryan is not available, besides all the others who are not available. It's a ligament injury, could have been much worse, but bad enough for being ruled out for this game, next game. We will see."

Endo: "Wataru got a proper knock as well. There we have to see as well. I wouldn't say it's much improved since Sunday but that's how it is."

Thiago: "There is no timescale. I don't know [if he will play again this season]. It's not that he might be in training in two weeks. I can't say more about it."

Bajcetic: " I had lunch and saw Stefan Bajcetic training and thought: 'why is he not training?' He hasn't been given the green light yet and no-one wants to hold him back. Checks, scans, bone looks good. Football is a complex sport for the body."

Salah, Szobozlai, Nunez: "We need miracles with a few players, that's why I don't want to rule out for too long but it's touch-and-go for the boys who were not available for the final. Darwin, Mo, Dom, we have to see what they can do today."

So I don't see any way round this. we are looking at u21s from midfield onward tomorrow.

To me does sound very cryptic the first line is very contradicory as well is he training or not? Hopefully we might see one or a combination of Salah, Nunez and Dom on the bench to hopefully get 15 minutes or so

Even on a vastly reduced contract, I wouldn't renew Thiago's deal. Quality player in the right team but not the right fit for us (could change after Klopp of course).

I think we have enough quality at CB without needing to keep a very injury prone Matip...

Be sad to see them both go but there is no room for sentiment

I think it means he's training in the gym but not ready for the training pitch

Thiago was a great signing at the time especially against low blocks. However, we've evolved our midfield and tactics in general and he is effectively surplus at this point.

Agreed. Can’t see both staying without klopp. He may have wanted to keep Matip as 5th choice and an experienced head around the place but depends on how they want to see out last couple years of their career.

But I think in some ways a new manager has easier time to let them both go as no sentiment required.

I presume bajcetic is in the gym doing stuff with the rest of the lads in the stretching or whatever

He is not outside with the team doing the full training sessions.

the key part for me was the "bone is good" comment. that hints at hat they were looking at. Stress/growth issues with bones and the medical staff are sitting on the kid for a while.

It does sounds like they will have more fitness rests. Szoboszlai bascially told a hungarian journo at Wembley that he was pencilled down for forest game and he's been also held back by medical teams.

Nunez coudl leap two barriers and push lads out of his way to celebrate. I doubt he's that bad.

Same for salah, he's for sure in light training so its again down to medical to release the beast.

We have to remember this lot released trent back to the team and he was reinjured so they are damned either way.

    agreed.

in a pragmatic way neither have any call on the club even if its harsh on matip. he was going anyway but is now injured so its tough on him but he will have to find a club. I wuld have had no issue with a 6 month deal to see him to fitness or whatever but we need ot be looking forward

Thaigo is a 200k problem. its that simple 10 mil is down the pan in the last year. Thats the risk with injuries but thats also the harsh reality so we move on again.

LFC have endo as the OAP in mfield but also have Macca and the younge rbod are all 21-23 etc. I don't think we really need "experience" if that experience costs that much and isn't avialable.

I'd love a milner who'd do the job and be a great example but thiago is too expensive for that role and not available enough. Its a crying shame given the obvious god given talent and great attitude etc but reality is he just can't get fit.

    Anyway: looking to the opponent:

Southampton lost at home to milwall last Saturday.

    Bazunu
Harwood Bells, Stephens, Bednarek ,Walker peters
    Aribo Smallbone Armstrong
    Brooks Adams Fraser

First off theres no surprises there and all very familiar names except for harwood bells who is on loan form man city but is also a cb not a rb.

Brooks joined them from bournemouth on loan and played against us last year

If we had say oh 2 senior CMs left I'd not be overly concerned about getting a hiding here.

The likelyhood is we will have a decent back 5 but then 6 kids in front of them and they will need to front up to senior players so obviously scoring will not be easy.

They have lost 3 in 5 now so have dropped form being in the auto spot fight to starting to lose touch. Millwall, hull and bristol city won

Last thing we want is for any of our players to receive more injuries and become Thiagos. It's not convenient for them all to be injured now, but sounds like they'll be slowly coming back into team- and the long term health of players is more important than getting them fit for any specific game.

As long as we don't continue racking up more injuries the squad could be a little more padded again within a fortnight as those barely-injured return to full fitness.
