There have been several posters saying that rugby league supporters shouldn't sing M.O.T. and that they are mere minnows compared to the football club .I beg to differ when I began supporting Leeds they were known affectionately as the MUGS crowds were small for a city the size of Leeds the big crowds and majority of support was for the rugby teams od Hunslet and to a much bigger extent to Leeds. To give you an idea Leeds RL paid Lewis Jones £6k to join Leeds IT WAS A MASSIVE AMOUNT OF MONEY IN TODAYS TERMS WELL OVER £1M thats how much Leeds could afford whilst Leeds United largest spend was on Harold Brook from Sheff U for £600 . .Leeds RL were attracting the biggest crowds ,the pendilum began to swing the other way when by pure luck we signed Charles .His Mother upon hearing the news thought John would have to get a passport if he wanted to go to Leeds! Charles not Revie started getting the crowds to follow Leeds Revie merely took over the mantle and bettered it by producing a great team So lets be proud for Leeds City that we have such a great team to repesent our city and for the sake of all thats good in Yorkshire and Leeds in particularly lets hound that moron out of our club and get rid of the cancer enveloping it
To be honest, it does piss me off that they sing the song but only because the majority of rugby fans that go to see Rhinos hate Leeds United. So why nick our songs? That’s what pisses me off. P.S The Spelling Policeman will have a field day with this article But I get your sentiments.
Some interesting stuff in there, especially the 'mugs' nickname. Still, just because rugby league was once Leeds' major sport, that doesn't mean the Rhinos fans have a right to pillage a song whose opening line is 'Here we go with Leeds United'. Even though that pendulum of support has swung a long way towards the footballing side in terms of attendances (Rhinos = 16,000, United = 22,000), I wonder what the averages would be if you deleted away fans and out-of-town fans from the equation. I suspect both teams might be at around 14,500. Or at least not far off that figure. Football still has a long way to go in the city of Leeds. Well, so does sport in general. We're not a rugby city, but we certainly need to capture people's imaginations if we're to survive with 40,000+ attendances in the top division (if we ever get there again!) now that our nationwide fanbase looks like it's on the decrease.
