Conversely, he was good fun to have as part of the pundit team IMO - there would be two other pundits who would give a sensible and measured opinion on the events, then there was Ian Wright, who was just like that gobby bloke in the pub.
It sounds a lot like this board, Bidley. I'm not sure I'd like to comment on who are the sensible, measured ones and who are the gobby blokes, though!
There are a lot of media folk who try to speak with authority about Fulham (and other smaller teams), yet have no knowledge of the club, players or ever go to games. They tend to repeat the tripe they have read in the papers or the 10 minutes of highlights of games they have seen on TV. I cringe at the amount of mistakes that come out of their mouths. It's refreshing when someone like Gordon 'Ivor' Davies comes on to give his views of a Fulham game. The likes of Mullery and Tony Gale use to whind me up, as their comments were normally derogatory. I think Dixon and Chris Kamara live near Fulham and come down to games even when they are not working, so they tend to have a bit more knowledge. Patrick Barclay (formerly of The Times) is another writer who comes down to the Cottage. If you watch the Sunday Supplement on Sky, a lot of the journalists center round the top clubs, with the London ones having a Chelsea or West Ham biased. I've been told that there are a few new football writers coming through who are Fulham fans, so maybe the tide will turn.
At least Wrighty has a bit of charisma! And I agree wholeheartedly with SBM on the regurgitated opinion thing. Sometimes it's so obvious it's painful.
Hahaha. I actually don't mind Savage but I get what you mean. Anyone he used to play for Wales with is automatically a hero. I remember him commentating on Hughes for QPR, now I think a lot of people might have brought up the fact that Hughes walked out on FFC and should be criticised for doing so, but all Robbie was interested in was praising him to the high heavens for the work he did with Wales and Blackburn. It's easy to make someone look good if you never mention the bad things.
