I completely agree about the substitutions. But that too was probably more of a direct result of the tactical switch. When playing the usual 4-3-3 type formation, we don't have the option of bringing Tadic off the bench to grab a goal, for example, because invariably he's already on the pitch. Oh how nice it is to have options on the bench other than Juanmi!

Probably about right. I bet Mark Hughes would vote for himself if they ever had a vote :)

It was on the commentary during the match. I thought about that and could only come up with a couple. Mark Hughes was a very good international standard footballer, though not world class. Pochettino [though I almost choke to think it] would probably be the other player. They would be on a par with Erwin, if that's not to insult Ron's older brother, who was a fine Dutch International.

Mark Hughes has never struck me as a bloke who fancies himself over much. I think he'd recognise one of the world best ever defenders is the best ex-player currently managing in the PL.

Between Ron and Hughesie definitely. In the event of a tie breaker, Ron wins for outstanding performance against ze Germans.

He didn't manage to recognize the importance of the most talented player this country had when he played in the same team as him :)

I don't think it's even close. Ron was a far better player than Hughes.

Well as they played against each other at least once, in the 1991 Uefa cup winners cup final, perhaps we could ask Ron. I expect he'd tell you what a talent Hughes was.

Certainly not denying that Hughes was an exceptional player. Ron was a class above though.

Not that it's the be-all and end-all but Hughes was (mainly) a striker and I think Koeman may have scored more goals in his career.

This is correct. Koeman scored 193 goals at club level and 14 for his country.
Hughes scored 164 for club and 16 for country.

Highest scoring defender ever. It's a remarkable record. My jaw dropped when I read it.

    That is quite astounding.

Mind you, as Hughes' country was Wales, his international record is quite impressive.

Another fact to think about is that Hughes flopped at Barcelona. I don't think anyone would say that about Koeman...

True. But wasn't Hughes trying to displace Gary Lineker?
