Basic supply and demand. There were 5 clubs in for him, 3 in England, 2 in France. The 3 in England were all Championship clubs, and at the very least, they wanted to limit the damage, so refused to sell to a "rival" (yes, I know, it's hilarious hahahaha laugh it up ok done). Take those 3 out and there's just 2 french teams. Presumably only one could afford even the low transfer fee we got for him. As soon as a player hands in a transfer request their value drops.
