Palace. He dropped down a division to join us. Been with us since League 1, lifted the JPT, he's the last link with the side that started on that fantastic journey in 2009. Best years of the 40+ I've been supporting Saints were those back to back promotions. Gutted if he goes, ****ing gutted. Words can't describe it.
£8M for a 32 year old is a very good deal for both parties. Saints would be getting a very tidy sum for their highest paid player that is in his twilight years and Man Utd would be getting an experienced Premier League player and leader to back up their youngsters.
He's 32! I wouldn't pay more than ten million for a 32 year old defender, even if he was awesome. Realistically they are probably going to get 2-3 seasons out of him MAX.
It's the papers that are smoking - I'm just getting the second hand fumes https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/foot...million-old-trafford-switch-by-jose-mourinho/ http://www.telegraph.co.uk/football...ansfer-news-and-rumours-on-monday---live-upd/ http://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/fo...tafi-Liverpool-Lucas-transfers-rumours-gossip
I suppose it is worth the higher fee if it gets you the title, does Jose feel he would improve the back line enough to do that? If yes then he's worth much more than £10M.
He'd be a squad player. But we do need another centre half as Rojo is ****, Blind isn't a centre half and Jones makes Darren Anderton look like Ironman.
Just because you wouldn't pay it doesn't mean we'll accept lower than that. Many people wouldn't have paid 25 for Lallana but that was the price we set. Same as I wouldn't pay 89 for Pogba. If the buying club wants the player that bad then they have to pay the asking price of the selling club. Surely judging on the last few Summers we can safely say that our board don't let players who are tied down to long contracts go on the cheap?
Yep you've got me there fella, The Sun, Telegraph & The Star.... See my post above to Bodanki. We don't let players on long term contracts go on the cheap.
Doesn't his contract only have two years left to run? You let Liverpool have Lambert for £4m when he had two years to go, although was that deal to soften them up so you could mug them for Lallana and Lovren?
I stand corrected, thought it was an extra year to that. Not a fair comparison to Lambert though as he was already on his way down and Fonte, as a cb (they generally play on longer) has another 2 years in him at the top level imo. He's also come back off of a great Euros which adds to fee as well. Also that ignores my key point. We were happy to let Lambert go to his boyhood club. We want to keep Fonte, big difference.
This is true. Although you did sell Lambert to a direct rival for the EL spots... Tbh I'd be surprised if you sold Fonte unless he really pushes for the move. Even if he wants out, he had a good partnership with Van Dijk last year and you'd struggle to replace him at this stage. Looking longer term, even if he runs the contract down and leaves on a free, a good CB partnership is worth much more than £4m a year. Particularly now you've lost Mane, Pelle and Wanyama - I think if Fonte left you could struggle quite badly this season.
Btw, from your sig: "Southampton FC: The only team to score 5 first half goals and 5 second half goals in the same Premier League season." Am I missing something - the PL season lasts 38 games so surely every team scores at least five goals in the 38 first halves and five in the 38 second halves? Or are you talking about goals in one game?
Now that, I agree with pretty much every word, though I think we'd miss Fonte more in a leadership capacity rather than just the player if that makes sense. Mentioned before but for me it will hurt as well if he goes be ause he's our last player left from our league 1 team. That little bit of history gone Still don't think it's a done deal yet by any stretch, we'll just have to wait and see. Mourinho willl be loving how it's unsettling us before Friday though. Edit - were Liverpool an EL rival? When he went there we had just finished 8th to their 2nd.
I remember this from a pub quiz - technically they are from the 2014 season vs Sunderland and Villa if I remember correctly. I say technically as it turned out one of the goals was an own goal so was a fun argument weather that counted as "scored" (personally I don't).
