lol the quality of football in the olden times was dreadful in comparison today wasn't it. Stiff, regimented, players with not a lot of pace. probably why Ipswich did so well...
Thanks for posting this eeore. Not being old enough to see the games like Dave, and one or two others on here no doubt, I absolutely loved watching this. I actually thought some of the football being played was pretty decent - it wasn't the players fault that the ball was like a lead balloon or that the pitches were more mud than grass! Some of the antics they got up to were interesting to say the least. A time when footballers were real men and goalkeepers were unable to get life assurance as stepping out over the white line meant you knew you were going to get pasted from start to finish (We could put some of Dave's dementia down to the amount of shoulder charges he had to endure in his goalkeeping times no doubt!) but what a legend our goalie was playing on with dislocated shoulder! What a goal our 'inside left' (love that term!) scored into the top corner too and did anyone else notice how we were ****ed over by the ref even in nineteen fifty ****ing nine too!!! That was never a free kick in a million years after witnessing what he gone on before hand in the other games. Our player didn't actually do anything wrong and what happened - Luton went and scored from the resulting free kick!!!
I wasn't allowed to go to the games at that stage as an 8 year old wouldn't have seen a thing, But listening to it on the radio was magic. Mid week replays was me lying in front of an open fire in my striped winceyette pyjamas. Had to be in bed before Dad got home, cycling of course. The Luton semi replay was in the afternoon for some reason and we were at school and were allowed the radio on. Then the dream was shattered by Billy Bingham. Then we had to catch up with all the league games. They wouldn't do it nowadays, they would moan about every bloody thing. Too much football, to much travelling etc. And it was the same team weeek in week out.
