All this "banter" and point scoring going on when we all know the score. Liverpool is a far bigger club than us and have achieved success both domestically and in the Euro cups, that we can only dream of. It is true to say that it is highly doubtful that we will ever win one of those titles let alone the cupboard full that Liverpool have.

Right, that's off my chest so now for the present and, maybe, the future. We exceeded our expectations last season whilst Pool fell short of theirs - for whatever reason. As a result, the gap between the two clubs wasn't that great. Next season, we know that we will first have to fight off a relegation threat before, hopefully, kicking on and consolidating a mid table place. Pool, with all their resources, will be looking at a top 6 place, or better. Fair assessment?

For us it all depends on whether or not Laudrup can manage in the Premier League. If he can, with the excellent signings he has made (with more to follow), we might push ourselves well into the top half. With limited resources that is probably the best we can ever hope for except, perhaps, for the odd cup where we could be dangerous to any team. Along the way, we will beat a top 6 club or two or even three and take a lot of satisfaction in doing it with our budget squad. Our goal purely is to become an established club at the top level, knowing realistically that that is as good as it's ever going to get for us.

Liverpool, of course, will have aspirations far in excess of that and are entitled to given their support, financial backing and great tradition. The thing is, they might never get back to where they were in view of the fact that the likes of the two Manchesters, Chelsea and perhaps Arsenal all now carry greater clout in the transfer market. As for next season, much will depend on how Rodgers will cope with his particular challenge. He will never have experienced pressure such as he is about to face and he has to do it whilst changing his teams entire footballing philosophy. It will not be easy and some early losses will test his mettle big time.

It seems to me that for both teams, it is going to be how our new managers cope with the challenge ahead. It's going to be interesting to say the least and I can't wait for the new season.

How do you know you've "bottomed out ",season hasn't started yet ,if you want to use our game away last year I suggest ,how many chances did you need to "win comfortably" we could well have come away with all three points with a bit more composure in front of goal but thats academic now

Fair, top 6 would be nice, even just because we've beaten off one of Spurs/Arsenal/Newcastle to get there.

I think Swansea have as good a chance as any for 8-10th. Everton always seem to come in and around there with Moyes but otherwise it's a lottery.

There's a huge fallacy that Liverpool supporters are demanding wild dreams of success - only idiots do that. But, there is obviously a huge challenge for Rodgers. We're not far off though, we need some ammo up front and we're sorted.

It's going to be fascinating, what a game football is and what a league the PL is, every year it's special for a different reason.

Well, we've just had our worst season since WW2, can't really get worse with the squad we have. There are a lot of good players at the club and some decent prospects; we should improve. Last season we didn't have a run of form, everything was patchy... the margins are very thin at the top end of the league, much like at the bottom.

I could use practically any game we played at Anfield. We played United off the pitch and drew 1-1. They were hanging on. We outclassed Arsenal but lost 2-1 (RVP was brilliant for about two minutes, but it was enough). We didn't score enough - and when you don't score you invite pressure, and pressure translates into goals for the opposition that they might not merit based on the game. But, that's our own fault I suppose.

"We've just had our worst season since WW2".

Well, seasons 1954/1955 to 1961/1962,found Liverpool in the old Second Division, better known now as The Championship.

So,wouldn't they be "worst seasons" than 2011/2012?

Shame they are where they are right now.

One of the better away trips last year. The fans were very friendly, mixing freely before and after the game and one of the few grounds where we made to feel welcome. Their neighbours could learn a lot from them

Us selling Allen for 15 million & Liverpool buying Carroll for 35 million ..... Might be better for Liverpool fans to worry about how they feel about buying instead of how we feel about selling .. Lol

Think our days (as in last summer) of wild overspending are over. We had lots of money left over from the club being bought from the administrators so it's unlikely we'll splash it again in that fashion.

We played our first pre-season game tonight and looked very comfortable at adopting something akin to Rodger's style.

Have to say that if there is a deal for Allen, you should be hoping to get Shelvey/Sterling on loan (once Sterling is old enough). Even Dani Pacheco put in a shift tonight and would benefit from another loan.

There's a stat I can't recall right now about our points total since WW2 and last season, but it's late in the day for trawling the web!

Think we won the league during either the first or second world war, but it's not counted for obvious reasons towards the overall total, interesting.

Pretty sure there's an unofficial title or something.

United fans used to go crazy about it on the old 606, distinctly remember something. Being United fans, it could all be horseshit though.

In one stretch of 20 years , Liverpool finished 1st or 2nd 19 times . And they didn't financially paralyze the rest of the teams like Man U did in the last 20 years of " Store Bought " titles .
