Alreet lads and lasses. I'm coming home! Flight booked from Oz for next week and it'll be wheels down At Newcastle Airport at 6:45pm next Tuesday...back on home turf after nearly 3 years down under.....dying for a proper kebab !! So back to my original point. What's the job market like back there at the mo, picking up....still ****e or getting worse ? I have a particular set of skills, skills that have been acquired.....you see where this is going I'm looking for something GIS related (geographical information systems) preferably, but also have some basic SQL knowledge, project management business analysis and process mapping - I've spent 10 years in local government and the last 3 years in the water industry. Still gonna be working from the UK for the company I work for here but on a contractor basis but will be looking for something else as its not likely to be a long term thing ! I know there's a managers job going at the Toon but there are a few on here way more qualified than me for that! Any ideas, advice or links to sites for me to read up on during the few sober minutes of my flight home would be useful Looking forward to carrying on the banter from the motherlands time zone.
There's a lanky useless sack of ****e in a position in a business not to far up your street mate. They'd take anyone over him as long as you're willing to work for minimum wage and also do part time hours in the owners sweatshop.
Some good advice mate, stay where you are, I lived over there for 20 years and came back to the North east , its a f--king tip. I'm busy saving up enough money to go back there and retire, great place, will miss the football though but thats about all.
Not an option mate I'm afraid. Will definitely be back tho at some point. Amazing place and we never got to see anywhere near the amount of places we wanted to check out....it's a ****ing huge bit of rock. A 3 hr drive to IKEA is pretty normal where I am...and that's just one way ! Do you wanna spend your weekends shopping or on the beach tho?
The government tell us that the job market and the economy is improving. Everything else tells me otherwise. I am only in the UK because I need to the NHS for my missus and thankfully here in Wales the medication is free for now otherwise I'd be spending a small fortune each week to keep Glaxo shareholders in clover. Turn around and go elsewhere. If we can afford it we're thinking of France or Norway in the future but I am going to need a larger pot to piss away before I can.

Mind, he'd have to buck himself up a bit. Over two weeks since the QPR game and the headline game still hasn't been sorted. If he doesn't get a move on, we'll be into next season.
Look I have been busy arranging things for err...a client. He has had some ehm...discussions with the pol...a third party which means it is necessary on very short notice to err...rearrange his commitments. Fortunately, whilst he has to change jobs it does look as though he won't need to go to the USA. Not that he couldn't if he wanted to. I have had to err... explain things to this third party and it does seem as if we have now been able to reach an ehm ...understanding. Okay, I'm off to the QPR game. You don't have a vacancy for an experienced Campaign Manager, do you?
I love the north east and there's plenty of work if you are prepared to get off your arse. ****ing hell, we have some great people up here, there are some marvellous places to visit, we have beaches, the countryside, and the social life is great. Weather's **** like but give me a sunday afternoon watching a live band and having a few pints at the Tyne bar on Newcastle's Quayside over a bbq in 90 degree heat anyday.
Judging by the other 5 posts you might have been better on LinkedIn than Not606! Your skill set are however in great demand in the oil and gas industry whether it be downstream (pipelines) or upstream (geological mapping). Also you can often work remotely doing consulting work etc. Just repatriated our software engineer so he is now working remotely from Holland developing SQL database with GIS front end for us. If you are not yet on LinkedIn join up and join group called GIS, Mapping & Geo Technology Professionals. Also have a look at pages for Oil And Oil Service Companies in UK. They often advertising jobs there.
Cheers JT - I'm all over LinkedIn, have been for the last 3 years or so so I'll look up that group. More than willing to travel/work remotely and set myself up as a contractor/ltd company (still trying to find out the differences between both). Applied for a couple of things but didn't get shortlisted as the company decided to employ post-grads. I don't have any formal GIS qualifications and having 15 years experience and just having turned 40 I guess there ain't much point in looking at some sort of GeoMatics/Geospatial/GeoScience degree now, dunno...we'll see what crops up and see if I need to go back to school !
That might be an issue with the Oil Companies but not so much with the Service Companies. With GIS from our point of view hands-on experience with Arc-Map is far more important than a degree which has more to do with the understanding of mapping and projection systems than how to use the software. If you have been working in the water industry - particularly the hydrogeological side of it, its probably very similar. Ours tend to be very specialist data sets that you probably wouldn't get taught about anyway. Good luck. If I hear of anything through my contacts will PM you.
