SUNDERLAND winger James McClean has made a pledge to manager Martin OâNeill that he intends to stay at the Stadium of Light for the long term. The Irishman believes there is nowhere better for him to continue his football education following an incredible six months that saw him transform himself from reserve team player to potential European Championships star. Homesickness, rather than a lack of game time, was his biggest problem early on, something that has been cured over the past few months. McClean, 23, only cost Sunderland an initial £350,000 a year ago from Derry City. However, his worth now could easily be 20 times that figure. Good performances for the Republic of Ireland in Ukraine and Poland would interest some other clubs in a winger who is âuniqueâ in the eyes of OâNeill because his most potent weapon is taking on defenders, a rare skill these days. But he dismissed the notion that he would be looking to move on to a so-called bigger club. McClean said: âThe only thing I want to do is improve my game further. âIâm a Sunderland player and it would be crazy to even think about anything else. I just want to become better in each game, week-in, week-out, and thatâs the aim. Itâs a target Iâve always set myself. âJohn OâShea has been great since day one. Then as you get more playing time, you fit in more with the squad. I get on really well with everyone now. There are great people at the club, not just the players, the staff and coaching staff. âMy first few months in England were difficult, but I got home a lot. The clubâs been great that way. Theyâve understood and that helped a lot. But Iâm settled in really well now. They allow me to get home as well. âI think that might be the first season, but I donât think next year Iâll be home as much. But thatâs not a problem as Iâm well settled in now. Itâs not really an issue.â Read More http://www.journallive.co.uk/safc/safc-news/2012/05/19/61634-31001124/#ixzz1vJ0fEn2T
Next season will be the make or break. I personally believe that with modern day analysis players and teams get worked out, you see it every season with the promoted teams. It how his game develops and expands. Kyle Walker back in December took him home in his pocket, the only time he has ever been totally excluded from a game, so it can be done. Admittedly it was his first start.
Aye but in the same game Gareth Bale went home in Bardsley's pocket! A and he is worth £30m + according to spurs.
