    Afternoon.

Jay Spearing has today signed a contract extension at Liverpool Football Club. The 22 year old midfielder has made eight apperances for the first team this season.

I think this is excellent news. Since King Kenny has come back, Jay has been playing and playing very well in my opinion. Delighted for the lad.

Very good sign, although contract extensions mean little to me now. It's a common ploy for a club to throw a contract extension in the hope of getting more money for the player, but it is a good sign nonetheless.

Yeah, but I can't see us selling Spearing. I do agree with you point about contract extensions though. :emoticon-0100-smile

He's come on leaps and bounds. He was ridiculed by certain sections early in the season, but if he is going to use anyone as an inspiration it has to be Lucas, who has gone from a figure of fun to being one of the most valuable players.

Well done to the lad, again we need guys like him in the team who put grit and determination in. you need a wide cast of players to be successful and spearing fits that tireless worker who plays for the shirt bill.

He's earnt it. He was given a chance by Kenny, and shown all the doubters he can play at this level. Agree with the sentiment with contract extensions, but Jay might do a Carra and stay for life.

He surely deserves it.There is one thing that Kenny looks for in a player and thats competitiveness. As he was a born competitor himself. He loves competitors. And Jay Spearing is a competitor. For someone of his size,He's a real little battler.Battling wise,He's in the Jamie Carragher mould.John Flanagan is made of the same stuff.

    I have a question.
Is it Lucas that is bringing him along?or is it the tactics that Kenny has has deployed that is making it easy for him?or is it a mixture of the two?
I reckon its a mixture of the two.Watch how both Lucas and Spearing both cover the full-backs,One goes left, the other goes right. Its a clever move as they win possesion and it starts attacks.

I think it's down to Kenny giving him a run of games. I know he's had a few games previously and not done much, but with a proper run in the first team, Kenny behind him and a positive atmosphere at the club, he has now got the confidence to show us what he can do.

Obviously hacing those around him in the team will have contributed. Nothing better than winning, and we didn't do that much under Hodgson.

It may be something simple that Kenny has done, but its hard to describe.Even Dirk Kuyt looks like a different player to the start of the season.Okay he was dependable and reliable and would run himself into the ground, but now theres an end product. Is it Suarez that has made an impact on him?Has he found his ideal ''partner in crime''.
Theres going to be players there that are going to go ''oh ****,How am I going to get my place back in this team,I may have to get my finger out''.I'm not refering to Andy Carroll,I'm refering to Steven Gerrard. The players are now doing the basics and doing them well.I remember earlier in the season Hodgson was telling Daniel Agger to not to play from the back and pump the ball forward early. Now this is rediculous as Danny is a ball playing centre back.Look at Martin Skrtel against Birmingham, dribbling in their penalty area!!!He's found out that he can do things he never thought he could.Or is it maybe he was never allowed to.Kenny has injected a lot of confidence into those players and not just the youngsters. When a player is subbed,he doesn't sulk,he doesn't moan,He high fives the manager.Unbelievable.

Gotta agree with much everyones said, I think Kenny made a good choice giving the lad a chance to make his mark. the side have helped him ease into things, and Kennys advice and influence must give him a hell of a boost. As said before, contracts mean little nowadays, but after the season we have had everyone must be looking forward to a fresh season with Kenny in charge from the off .

Us fans want him to get the job.The players want him to get the job. Most of them have said as much.I reckon its only a matter of time before he gets the job.

He's only made 8 appearances?? I thought it was more, lol

Jay has been great and this wont only be a boost for him but also to a lot of the academy lads as they can look to this as a sign that if they work hard then their labour will bear fruit. Well played Jay and with Kenny offering players contract extensions this can only give more indication on the role he will be playing in Liverpools future

I'm well chuffed for both Lucas and Spearing as they have been blasted by fans and they came through it. It's so good to see two young players come through a difficult phase and still not complain and these are sort of players/people/characters we want at the club.

However, I believe they still have a long way to go before we can say they are good enough to play at the highest level. In my opinion, both players are defensive and are very good at pressing and winning possession. But do we need two players to do this? Rafa was often blasted to playing two defensive midfielders.

My only concern is that whilst Spearing and Lucas have good engines and are good at winning possession, we need them to start dominating the midfield and creating. The fact that Lucas is one of the top tacklers in the league highlights the fact we don't keep possession enough and have to chase the opposition to win it back.

Both players have time on their side and are making terrific progress but I feel they need to add more to their games.
