Right now we have seen a bit of Jamie Vardy, what are people's opinions? For me there is alot of pluses and a few negatives. He is still adjusting to the league so it wont be til around christmas time when Vardy is well and truly used to the pace and standard of the league. Plus for me are his workrate, he is unselfish and a real team player. He has proven already he knows where the goal is. 3 goals already and 2 wrongfully disallowed. Had they correctly stood then his striker rate is very impressive But onto a few negatives, maybe slightly harsh. His first touch is shocking at times, he struggles to get the ball under control at times because of a poor first touch. Had he had a better first touch last night he might have been in but instead he had to lay it off to Nugent who hit the bar. Against Blackpool in the first few minutes had he took a better first touch he could have made the angle alot nicer for himself but he was forced to go a little outwide. Its a few times I have thought this. But saying that Beckford's first touch isnt much better. Strength is another one, he is very easy to knock off the ball. Against Blackpool proved that where everytime he got the ball he got outmuscled for the ball, while he needs to get a little more upper body strength he needs to make sure he doesnt lose his pace like Waghorn has, because Vardy's pace isnt too far off Lloyd Dyer's at times. The last thing is time. This will come along the more he plays in this league. He takes too long sometimes on the ball and allows defences the recover and the chance goes Nigel has shown alot of faith in him by playing him ahead of Beckford, Nugent, Waghorn, Futacs and Schlupp. Pretty fitting that Vardy got the winner last night to take some of the pressure off Nigel. So what do people think. Harsh? Fair?
He will only get better at this level... have him over beckford all day long..has the fire in the belly, beckord seems to have settled for what he is. I don't think its fair to say he gets knocked off the ball, he is not a big target man, thats not his game..anyway getting knocked off the ball in the area might not be a bad thing. As in life.... attitude is an important ingredient for success ..he has it... for a million he is a bargain for me... lets face it....we could of signed a kraut worth nowt...or a bosch not worth the dosh....
Fair. I agree with everything you've said. The good points about him are what comes with talent. The bad things about him will be rectified, I have no doubt, with time.
He has a great jump on him. Only thing i would say is this. Vardy mate, just SHOOT sometimes!!! Be more selfish and just shoot!! Also, when he misses he does often miss via hitting the target rather than wide.
Beckford isn't worth 2m though. Very few players at this level should be commanding a fee of 2m. At conference level, there shouldn't be any players commanding a fee of 1m. For that sort of fee he should be doing better IMO (bearing in mind i'm only going off comments on this thread, not what I've seen of him)
Im a big fan of vardy. Looks very good and the sort of player where it will matter less in a dry patch rather than someone like beckford as even if he is in a dry patch he is still running around everywhere!!
If he had scored 5 goals we'd all be saying how well he's done. Two goals on sunday against Hull and he'll have over a 1 in 2 record which is over 20 goals in the season if he keeps it up.
What I've seen of Vardy, reminds me of the BIG gamble the great Jock Wallace took when he bought Alan " Smudger" Smith from Alvechurch..... Who for a big lad was also knocked off the ball quite easily (though the game was a lot more physical then) but still chipped in with 12/15 (?) goals in his first season & look how he progressed !
Might not be the most efficient striker- he seems to have a lot of chances before he scores but when you consider the sheer number of chances he makes then I don't mind. My only issue is playing two workhorse strikers in Vardy and Nugent together, personally I'd love to see an attacking 4-3-3 with Nugent, Vardy and Schlupp in it. Or Beckford even
You don't move up that many leagues without having a few issues to iron out early on. And you don't get a flawless striker for £1m, even in this league. Of course there are things in his game to change. But the potential for a top player is certainly there, and he has got off to a better start than I except for one. Lots of players in this league are worth more than £1m. It's not our fault Unkle Ken let's your best players go for a handful of beans. And if we'd got the Beckford that used to play for you, then he would definitely have been worth £2m.
Near enough agree with all of this ... his other strength (as he showed gainst Blackpool) is going for gaps between defenders at pace in the box ... which frightens the hell out of them and can also lead to penalties where a leg is dangled etc ... early days yet but contrasting his work ethic against the likes of Beckford and Gally you can see why he is likely to be appreciated by the fans even when he is not at his best ...
You couldn't tell he was in the conference last year, looks more like a League 1 player who is developing well into a championship player.
