The striker had been in scintillating form as the Hoops marched towards the Championship title, but suffered a broken leg in January in an FA Cup tie against Blackburn that kept him out of action for seven months. Neil Warnock's side were promoted to the Premier League but Mackie had to wait until October to make his way back into the first team. âThe timing was poor, of me breaking my leg," he told Absolute Radio. "I was doing really well last season and obviously massively in the gafferâs thoughts when I was playing every week, and then it was someone elseâs chance to do well, and luckily they did and we got promoted, and I just got my head down. "The manager was obviously really positive with me all the way through my recovery and said, you know, he was looking forward to having me back, and Iâve come back and he obviously put me in the first team. "I obviously put a lot of hard work into my rehab and getting back with the medical team here, trained all the way through the summer so I was in most days and getting my head down, and obviously Iâm getting the rewards now by playing every week in the first team. "So obviously my chance came quite quickly, getting in the first team, and I had to get my fitness through playing games in the first team, I suppose thatâs the best way.â With the Hoops currently sitting in twelfth, seven points clear of Bolton and Wigan at the bottom of the table, Mackie put the team's good form down to the strong unity amongst the squad. âWe had a close-knit group last year, thatâs how you get promoted, you know, you have to have the close-knit if you want to have success in football, and we had that, and I think the other lads sort of slotted in and obviously they brought a lot of experience from this league," he added. "So obviously we respected that fact when they first came in and theyâve been brilliant since they come in.â The challenges continue as QPR face Liverpool on Saturday, but Mackie believes his side can get a result. "I think youâve got to be, you know," he said. "Theyâre a top-top side, it would be a great occasion for some of us who havenât played there before because, you know, itâs an unbelievable ground, great history, theyâve got some top players and, you know, weâll enjoy the occasion, but obviously weâre going up there having come off the back of a few good performances, not great results recently but then playing well, you know, going away there thinking we can get something, because I think we can.â
You'll be suggesting that they ask searching questions next! 99% of these interviews are obvious, I don't know for whose benefit though. Ours, the publication they appear in, the interviewer or the interviewee?
Ah that word 'obvious' again... the modern footballer's gateway into the use of 'long' words. Remember Hoddle was an early culprit - obviously!
Ha ha, I used to do that whilst reading 'Viz' on the tube. The other passengers used to think I was obviously 'touched' ..er...obviously.
