...hasn't featured at all yet in pre-season. Does anyone know why? Is he injured? Would seem strange to pick Chris Martin in midfield (vs Celtic 2nd half) over him. Apologies if this has already been mentioned!

he is behind the others in terms of fitness. he is still coming back from a very serious injury and a bit like pilkington last season, its a case of being patient and making sure all is fine with the injury. nothing to worry about - i would think he'll begin to feature soon but won't be playing regularly just yet <ok>

A cruciate ligament injury like his is obviously very serious. Normally takes 9 months to recover from the first time- which would put his return to full training (not match fitness) in late August.

Footballers, with the best physios, can recover quicker, but it makes no sense to rush them if you can afford to wait (for example, Owen never really recovered properly after being rushed back to action).

I can't see him being able to play a full match until late September tbh

his surgeon says he can take part and he himself said he only needs 1 or 2 more weeks. he said on his twitter page that he needs 1 or 2 weeks he said that before they went to austria so he could be back after this week

We don't actually need him desperately right now -- unlike Wilshere at Arsenal for example. It would be crazy to take any risk with the lad. Sure, he wants to be involved as soon as he can, but better safe than long term sorry. <ok>

As an aside. what about Fox? I haven't looked at the line ups for Berlin so don't know if he played any part but he certainly wasn;t there last night.
