I've been a big supporter of Szczesney since he broke into the first team, but have noticed that there are quite a few times that I think a top keepwe could have done better. For example the mata goal today he dived at a shot that was not too far away from him and (I hate to use this word but think its about right) flapped at it. I thought it was a save he should have made and the ball went in about a foot away from his arm. There have been a few times I've noticed he was slow to get down to and I now consider this a weak point in his game. When Manonne was in goal while Szczesney was injured I noticed getting to low shots was a lot stronger part of his game than Szczesney. Szczesney does have a lot of strengths and is improving such as positiooning and reading the game. At times people on here have commented about how he made an easy save but nothing about the faact he put himself in the right position. Im not saying he is not good enough, just that I think its worth watching for before deciding. What do you lot think?
I was thinking about this as well. When did he last make a 'top' save? Or put in a performance where you say, 'Chensey won us those points' today?
Even though I have some small doubts, it's not really a major issue. We have other massive problems to worry about first. Then in the summer, we should;d get a number 2 that can come in and give Chensey some serious competition.
I think Wenger made a strategic decision to keep WS as our No 1. It is not an easy decision imho because there were better keepers available, like Lloris. He was cheap, Wenger knows him well, the guy would prefer Arsenal to Spurs for sure, he would bring the experiense and would be perfect with our French speaking defence in TV, Kos, Coq, Squil and Sagna, but Arsene decided to rely on WS. I think tactically it might be a lost opportunity, but strategically it was the right decision, methinks.
I admit he had a poor game today, but his last 10 games have been pretty flawless. He saved a penalty against Man City, so I'd call that a good save. Like others have said, he has the ability to be one of the best. He's also very loyal to the club.
Is Ajax goalie Kenneth Vermeer still on the scouting list of Arsenal? Haven't heard any new transfer rumours since November.
I think he'll become top class but he's not there yet. Would like to see Wenger bring in some experience.
Szczeney has been pretty poor for some time now. Last game i remember him playing well was against Liverpool at Anfield Last season. He imo is totally overrated by us Gooners, maybe because we have had the likes of Almunia & Fabianski. I still can't belive we didnt try and sign Lloris at least as he is a much better Keep than Szez and he could also have learnt alot from him too. Szczeney should be the No2 Keeper for Arsenal as we would be a much better team for it but as he's been given the no1 shirt i doubt he wil lget dropped. I wouldnt mind us signing the Dutch No1 Skeltenburg from Roma who is meant to be available. 6f6 GK with great experience and is at the moment much better than Szez. He also available for under 5Million.
Don't really agree with the criticism of Szczesny really, he's done nothing wrong. Not sure if many keepers would have saved the Mata shot yesterday either. It's the players in front of him who are underperforming.
http://http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/184288-Rate-Your-Keeper?highlight=keeper Newcastle fans don't seem to rate him
He's an excellent 'prospect' most Goalkeepers aren't at their prime at his age so if we're patient we might find he can become world class but right now he's not the required class we need He hasn't don that much wrong since recovering from injury but conversely how much RIGHT has he done??? HOWEVER as it typically with our club with that gamble how many points might we forsake for not having a better goalkeeper I think we definitely need a class #2 as back up who can also help push him as well with the extra competition
Szczesney would make a good #2, but is a fairly average #1. He does not control the defence as well as is needed, something he will no doubt learn as he matures. As for his clearances.....one of the worst in the league. GK's are relatively cheap, so no excuses for not getting one what with all that cash we have under the mattress. If AW thinks we don't need one, then AW is wrong.
whatever if Mata did not not score that goal, it would have been a chance wasted. Most times shots save in those area either it's badly taken strike or luck on the keeper side. Mata goal was a well struct shot goalkeeper has to chance.
So another thing that you guys are coming around to? I have been slated about my comments on him more than Walcott. Never mind the not-so-good reflexes last few games, that he's generally good at. He always puts unneeded pressure on our defense in completely avoidable situations. The problem is that people only judge his failures when it results in a goal, but he does elementary mistakes in every game, whether we lose, win or draw.
His bad attributes are very easily corrected. So that he hasn't corrected them at all but actually regressed in 2 years, shows you something. I'm never confident with him in goal. And with never I mean complete non-chances, too. He may decide to put a short ball back in play with half their team still on our side, go out to make hollywood clearance and completely missjudge it... But with this guy there is never a "that's a piece of cake" moment. He gets away with it more often than any other keeper does, but luck shouldn't be taken into account when you weigh his pros and cons.
