Sakari Mattila has been called up to the Finland squad for their upcoming qualifiers following an injury picked up by national team captain Niklas Moisander, while Sean Kavanagh is in the Republic of Ireland U21 squad for one friendly and one competitive game.

A decent start for all concerned with wing-half Jazz Richards getting the main plaudits:

"Jazz Richards delivered the match-winning cross as Wales moved to the brink of qualification for the European Championship with a 1-0 win in Cyprus on Thursday evening. Chris Coleman’s men struggled to break down their hosts – although David Edwards had a goal disallowed in the first half – but managed to grab the game’s only goal on 82 minutes when Richards’ excellent teasing cross was powered in by the head of Gareth Bale.

The win keeps the Dragons at the top of Group B, and they now know that victory over Israel in Cardiff on Sunday will guarantee their place at next summer’s tournament in France.

Elsewhere, Cauley Woodrow and Emerson Hyndman were both given starts in the England Under-21s versus United States Under-23s match, with the Three Lions snatching a 1-0 win. Woodrow twice came close to opening the scoring in the first half, initially when US goalkeeper Cody Cropper denied him after he was picked out by Nathan Redmond, and then when a last-ditch block prevented him from netting after he was found by Jordan Ibe. The striker was replaced by James Wilson just after the hour mark – with Hyndman also making way moments later – and the Manchester United striker settled the match when he converted from close range in the 72nd minute.

Back in European Championship qualifying, Nikolay Bodurov played 90 minutes as Bulgaria were beaten 1-0 at home by Norway. Vegard Forren’s first international goal just before the hour mark was the difference between the two sides, leaving Bulgaria seven points off the pace in Group H.

Lasse Vigen Christensen also saw 90 minutes, as Denmark Under-21s were narrowly beaten by Germany in Lübeck. Casper Nielsen gave the Danes the lead just before half-time, although Timo Werner levelled matters shortly after the restart. Levin Mete Oztunali then netted on 82 minutes to win it for the Germans."

Friday was busy, especially for Sean Kavanagh -

Tim Ream played 90 minutes as the United States came from behind to beat Peru 2-1 in Washington on Friday. The visitors took the lead on 20 minutes when Daniel Chavez’s shot deflected beyond Brad Guzan, but the States equalised on the hour mark when Jozy Altidore won and converted a penalty. And the former Sunderland man settled the friendly encounter not long after when he was on hand to smash in a loose ball from six yards.

Ream was situated at left-back by manager Jurgen Klinsmann, and the Fulham defender impressed as he won his 14th international cap.

In European Championship qualifying, Sakari Mattila came on as a late substitute as Finland won 1-0 in Greece. Joel Pohjanpalo scored the decisive goal with quarter of an hour remaining, and Mattila entered the action with nine minutes left to shore things up. Jesse Joronen was an unused substitute for the visitors, while Kostas Mitroglou played 90 minutes for Greece. The result keeps Finland’s slender hopes of qualifying alive.

A dazzling first half display from Sean Kavanagh set Republic of Ireland Under-21s on their way to a 4-1 win over Qatar Under-23s in a friendly at Bury’s Gigg Lane. The Fulham youngster only played the first half but scored twice, first with a powerful strike from the corner of the area, and then with a fine 25-yard free-kick. Alan Browne and Harry Charsley were on target in the second half, with Almoez Ali Abdulla responding for Qatar.

“They were two fantastic strikes from Kav, he’s got a beautiful left foot,” head coach Noel King said after the win.

Elsewhere, Adam Taggart came on as a second half substitute as Australia Under-23s defeated Turkey Under-21s 1-0, and Moussa Dembélé featured in France Under-20s’ 1-1 draw with the Netherlands.

Jazz Richards and Wales were made to wait in their bid to qualify for Euro 2016 after being held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Israel in Group B on Sunday. Simon Church had an injury-time goal ruled out for offside, but Wales remain top of Group B and their hopes are still in their own hands, with games away against Bosnia-Herzegovina and at home to lowly Andorra to come next month.

Richards played the full 90 minutes and was booked just before the hour mark.

In Group H, Nikolay Bodurov was named in Bulgaria’s starting XI as they were beaten 1-0 in Italy. Daniele De Rossi hit the winner from the penalty spot in the sixth minute after Veselin Minev tripped Antonio Candreva. Both teams finished with 10 men when De Rossi was sent off with Iliyan Mitsanski after the pair clashed. The result moves Italy two points clear of second-placed Norway. Bulgaria are fourth on eight points.

Liam Donnelly was named as captain as Northern Ireland took on Scotland in their opening UEFA U21 qualifying match in Group 3 at Mourneview Park on Saturday afternoon. Northern Ireland went ahead after eight minutes when Mikhail Kennedy slotted home Michael Duffy’s cross. But Scotland levelled after 34 minutes as Ryan Christie raced clear and smashed in at the near post. Dale Gordon was sent off for the hosts 10 minutes after the restart for a second bookable offence and Scotland were in front soon after, Ryan Fraser finding the net with a low shot.

Cheating a bit but we had a few ex-players in the Northern Ireland v Hungary match tonight including this one, who very nearly kept a clean sheet.

Unfortunately for him, a minute from the end, he only managed to punch the ball away and NI equalised. Doomed also was another one, Chris Baird, who ten minutes from the end got a red card following two yellows within seconds of each other.

The third, Zoltan Gera was neither fortunate or unfortunate - indeed he was kind of anonymous.

Dundee United's new on-loan striker Adam Taggart got on the scoresheet overnight for the Olyroos but it wasn't enough as the Aussie U-23s lost 3-1 to FYR Macedonia in Skopje overnight.

In a lively start, Macedonia opened the scoring in the opening minutes before the former Hyundai A-League Golden Boot winner, who has joined the Scottish club on a six-month loan from Fulham, struck back to make it 1-1 on 14 minutes. The home side took the lead just before the break and made it 3-1 just after the hour mark.

The win in Skopje followed FYR Macedonia's recent 1-0 win over Ukraine. This was the Olyroos' second game on their European tour which started with an excellent 1-0 win over Turkey last Friday. They will now have to wait for Saturday's draw to determine their opponents for final AFC Qualifiers for the Rio Olympics 2016, which will be held in Qatar in January.

As well as for Adam Taggart it was another busy night –

“Yesterday evening saw Cauley Woodrow help England get their Under-21 European Championship qualifying campaign off to the ideal start, playing 90 minutes as they beat Norway 1-0 in Drammen. It was a tough test for the Young Lions on the Marienlyst Stadium’s artificial pitch and they survived a scare when Ghayas Zahid’s shot hit the crossbar and went over, but it was the visitors who made the breakthrough on the stroke of half-time. Norwich City’s Nathan Redmond was tripped in the penalty area, and England captain and Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to put his side in front. That goal was perhaps harsh on Norway – who had Real Madrid starlet and full international Martin Odegaard in their starting XI – and they continued to dominate proceedings in the second half, only to be denied by some resolute defending and good goalkeeping from Sunderland’s Preston North End loanee Jordan Pickford.

The win moved Gareth Southgate’s charges above their opponents to the top of Group 9.

Mattias Kait was handed a full debut for Estonia Under-21s after being promoted from the Under-19 setup, but he was unable to prevent his side from slipping to a 4-0 loss at home to Croatia. The Fulham youngster, who only turned 17 in the summer, played the full 90 minutes but goals from Antonio Milic, Mario Pasalic (2) and Josip Radosevic did the damage. It was Kait’s second taste of U21 European qualifying action, after he came on for the final five minutes on Wednesday as two late goals earned Spain a 2-0 win in Tallinn.

In qualifying for the senior tournament in France next year, Sakari Mattila again came on as a late substitute as Finland made it two wins from two at home to the Faroe Islands. Joel Pohjanpalo – who netted the winner against Greece three days earlier – was again the difference for Finland, heading in the game’s only goal midway through the first half. Mattila came on in the 84th minute to replace Thomas Lam, while Jesse Joronen was an unused substitute.

Those two wins have done Finland the world of good, as they can potentially grab a Play-Off spot – something that’s out of Greece’s reach. Kostas Mitroglou played 87 minutes as they grabbed a rare positive result on Monday – a goalless draw in Romania.

At Under-20 level, Moussa Dembélé won a penalty just before the hour mark for France in their friendly against the Netherlands. He saw his spot-kick saved, but the rebound was put in by Alexis Blin. Maxwell Cornet then grabbed a second for Les Bleus in the 77th minute to wrap things up.

Finally, Shane Elworthy and Anthony Dolan played a half each as Republic of Ireland Under-19s were beaten 2-1 in Italy. The visitors took the lead through Swansea City’s Tom Holland, but second-half strikes from Luca Vido and Ivan De Santis meant Ireland slipped to a friendly defeat in Cava de'Tirreni.”

The really good news is that they are now headed home and can enjoy some extra training.

    And last night -

“Tim Ream claimed a late assist but it was just a consolation goal as the United States lost 4-1 to Brazil at the Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts on Tuesday. A strong Brazil side took the lead through Hulk’s ninth-minute tap-in, before Neymar’s penalty doubled the advantage shortly after the restart following a foul on the Barcelona forward by Stoke City’s Geoff Cameron. Fellow Barca man Rafinha made it three on 64 minutes before Neymar grabbed his second moments later with a slick dribble and finish. The hosts had the final say, though, when left-back Ream played a square ball to Danny Williams, whose venomous shot from 30 yards left Marcelo Grohe in the Brazil goal with no chance.

At Under-23 level, Emerson Hyndman played 90 minutes as the United States beat Qatar 2-0 at Bury’s Gigg Lane. Benji Joya won and converted a penalty just before the hour mark to put his side in front, and Gboly Ariyibi was on target late on to ensure the U23s go into their CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship on the back of a win.

In Under-21 European Championship qualifying, Sean Kavanagh made a goal and saw 90 minutes as the Republic of Ireland defeated Andorra 2-0 away from home. Captain Tommie Hoban put his team in front with 13 minutes played, before Josh Cullen doubled the advantage shortly having been picked out by Kavanagh. The result maintains the Republic’s 100 per cent record in Group 2 where they sit second behind Slovenia who have played a game more.

Liam Donnelly was also in competitive action as he captained Northern Ireland to a 1-1 draw in Iceland. Ryan Johnson gave his side the perfect start when he found the net just two minutes in, but Aron Elís Thrándarson was on target later in the half to ensure the spoils were shared in Reykjavik, leaving Northern Ireland fourth in Group 3."
