either that or a mixture of the 2, so basically for a 0-0 both teams get 1 point, for a score draw both teams get 2 and for an away win you get 4 points instead of 3. That way it encourages the away to push forward instead of parking the bus.
As no law change is involved, could the Premier League introduce that or would it need FIFA approval?
I don't think more points for away teams would work. That would just get silly, with home teams playing defensively to restrict points. I don't think it would matter if the "big" teams got further away in terms of points because of it, the idea of reforming the points system is to encourage entertainment. I think the best way of doing it would be: 1 point for a 0-0 draw 2 points for a score draw 4 points for a win a bonus point for scoring 3 or more goals (by either team) I have debated also including a bonus point for losing by fewer than one goal, but I'm not sure that suits.
We can call it the "World Series". Has a nice ring to it, I feel. Wouldn't want it to be too understated.
and stop right there rob! i think that could work - i don't think you need to fanny about with bonus points
Sorry! That should read "by only one goal". I was converting from rugby's "fewer than seven points"...
OK, OK, I've stopped!! No need to tell me so many times! In seriousness, though, the bonus points are the fundamental mechanic behind making the game more enjoyable by increasing the likelihood of goals. That's how rugby have encouraged tries - not the change in points for wins. Why? Because it means you can win fewer games than your competitor, but as long as you score lots of goals, you can still finish ahead of them.
i get that. but as i pointed out earlier, do we want to make defending a completely lost art? there is a skill involved in defending - its not all about goals. goals should be rewarding but not the be-all and end-all. by making winning more valuable it automatically increases the need for goals. there's problems with every single system to be honest - i've tried discussing it before and nobody could find a better way than the current system. i'm sure there must be one out there!!
The bonus point is not very popular in rugby, mostly because a team who destroyed the bottom half of the table but is average/poor agains the top half can finish very high up despite the fact that they haver failed to beat any teams around them. Its been resisted in the 6 nations for a long time because that effect is amplified the fewer teams are playing, imagine a team getting a Grand Slam but not winning the tournament, would be ridiculous.
