The rivalry will become worse , people who truly know the rivalry will know it's not the football teams it's the Cities , do people think the citizens of porsmouth will now welcome us into their fair City ? Not a chance so whilst I have every sympathy with their fans I have absolutely no sympathy for their club , City , board , managers or players . Oh one fan I would love to meet if they do is that bellend with the bell and ring the f***er around his head like it's a royal wedding . Up the Saints For Southampton As Always Xxxxx
Actually on John PFC Westwood - I don't particularly like him but saw this the other day on Twitter: A Saints fan was in a bar in a Saints top, and there were loads of people in clothing relating to Pompey with logos or PFC etc. He kept his head down but some of them started getting lary and trying to start a fight over his choice of shirt. At this point it was Westwood who stepped in and diffused the situation and asked if the Saints fan (youngish guy) was ok. So maybe he looks like a nutter, but perhaps he can be alright away from the football. Seems to be the argument of many Pompey fans.
But would you response actually be based on objective and potentially quantifiable reasons or would it simply be because the city of Southampton has a rivalry with the city of Portsmouth which automatically makes it some kind of awful wasteland? Somehow, I doubt it would be the former.
If you didn't want to offend you wouldn't have made this thread in the first place. So stop making excuses and explain what you think is so wrong with the City of Portsmouth.
You mean apart from lots of interesting museums? Apart from the Sea Life Centre? Apart from lots of beaches? Apart from a rich naval heritage? Apart from Gunwharf Quays (I've never been but in my head it's a very nice place)? Apart from the amazing Crazy Golf on Southsea? Apart from the architectural brilliance of the Spinaker Tower?
As a kid, I always wanted to be taken to Bournemouth, for the beach. Sometimes I would be dragged to Southsea, with its shingle beaches, which I wasn't anywhere near so keen on. As an adult, and with all the silly bigotries aside, I find Portsmouth an interesting place, full of Royal Navy history, good pubs, museums, etc... Really good view to and from the Solent, and sailing into Portsmouth harbour, with the sun on it, is a great experience. Yes, there are places in Pompey you wouldn't want to be - so there are in every city. Southampton has its fair share of those. Pompey may lie on the coast, but it's quite different from Southampton, and long may that continue. Besides, I wouldn't want a clone city, down the road, and Portsmouth certainly isn't that. And nowadays, Southsea always surprises me with how nice it is, especially in the sunshine.
There is a tale in this alone , the average Pompey citizen is backward , inward looking , who glorifies their heroic 657 crew , these sort of people use the word scummer frequently not knowing that this supposed strike is bollocks . This said person shall weep like a child if they lose their supposed club , I say supposed as they never go to the match .
I live in Southampton and always supported the mighty RED & WHITE, but work in Portsmouth , there is nothing what so ever with Portsmouth , the people ate exactly the same , just support different teams. We have had our bad times and come through it very very strong , on the other hand they are not. What would i do all season without the friendly banter and micky taking so on one hand i want them to liquidate but on the other hand i dont , and its only football at the end off the day.
Speaking from a very self centred point of view, if Pompey go under our fanbase will increase by a couple of thousand. Those who go to the Portsmouth games to watch football, not so much to support Portsmouth, will have no club to go to anymore but a premier league club just up the road. Obviously I dont want them to go under, but if they did it would probably be beneficial to our ticket sales.
With the greatest of respect it's hardly an architectural jewell is it ? Thats not my point anyway it's not the buildings its the vast majority of it's citizens , and as a note Paris is beautiful yet full of arseholes .
And let's be honest just because the navy are based there it's hardly an excuse to promote the city as a tourist destination , shingle beaches as well . Hampshire has never been blessed with many historic cities bar Winchester or industrial cities with beauty or heritage , that has always been in the countryside .
Well, let me respond. I dont even know who in the bloody blue hell the 657 crew are. I thought the story about the origin of the term scummer being linked to a strike being urban legened was general knowledge. The generalization of "the average Pompey citizen is backward, inward looking" is unsubstanciated unless you can provide documented evidence to back that up. Besides which, what you said there is a general shot at Portsmouth Football Club fans and not answering the question. The question was: "what is wrong with the City of Portsmouth?" Not: "what reasons do you use to convince youself that you hatred of Portsmouth Football Club and its fans is justified?"
Don't rise to the bait, just mischief making, his location Liverpool?, Portsmouth is OK in my eyes, just look at our shopping centre if you need to know what isn't the best of Southampton!
"The vast majority of its citizens"? So you're going to sit there and tell me that you know the vast majority of Portsmouth 200,000+ population, that you've had the opportunity to meet and talk to most of them and to get to know them closely.
