Right, this is completely off topic but here goes...

As some of you might know, I'm an English student and am currently completing my module in creative writing...

We have to hand in our own collection of poetry (15 poems in total) with a reoccurring theme...My theme for this collection is the North East: So far I've written about:

    1) Watching Newcastle play football,
    2) The miner picket lines,
    3) St Cuthbert
    4) A soldier from Bishop Auckland in WW1
    5) Our Accent

And I'm well and truly stuck for inspiration...I've considered banging a few of the 'rape' poems in but unfortunately the 2 makers for this project are women and one is a raging feminist, so I'm not sure how well it would go down...(probably better than the feminist can BADUMCHII!)

Is there anything anyone on here can think of? I am actually starting to get desperate!

    Cuthbert Collingwood ?

Plenty about him around which should be easy to write a poem about.

One about Shearer? Local Legend, one of England's best strikers ever, scored the most goals for the club etc

The best poem i've ever read was written by a friend for his GCSE, it was more of a story but he managed to make it rhyme ect. It envolved a giant snake in an abandoned swimming pool building. To cut a very long story short my friend met many famous people (Mika hakkinen, Ruud van nisteroy ect) in the swimming pool and the snake ate them

Maybe you can draw some kind of inspirastion from that

Aye i thought about landmarks, was gunna do the Angel of the north but it seemed a bit cliched, maybe the Baltic?

The Shearer idea is one I've tried doing a few times but we are encouraged to give our poems elements of 'a conceit' (basically write it so that the real meaning is hidden) and it's tough to do, whilst still making it clear enough that it's him...Might do something numbers - 1892/9/206 etc.

    Cheers so far lads!

Start with it talking about Shearer and how he was a legend, then how everyone thought the new Shearer had arrived, then he went away to Liverpool and dissappointed everybody.

Write a poem about a long haired lass called Carol who left her true love for a rich man and it all went pear shaped. Build in references to Carroll's past so that the real inspiration is obvious but without dropping the character's persona as a girl. Could be a classic!

Yeah, a lot of people forget about him because of Nelson. No problem.

Funny you should mention accents, my father originally from Magherafelt Co Londonderry says he's never known anyone be as interested in other people like the Geordies. He thinks as soon they hear a different accent they want to know all about you, not in a nosey way but genuine and friendly.

What about a regional dish or food. You know like Robbie Burns wrote about the haggis.

How about a poem about how modern feminists are really misandrists who were rejected by blokes they had a crush on when they were growing up <whistle>
