Roger was a great defender for us, but I am not sure I have seen a better DC in a Cardiff shirt (red or blue) than Hudson. Who would you guys pick ahead of the other if they were both at their best?
Hudson was immense last night, and except for Charlton, has been all season. Hudson reliable, solid, good passer out of defence - Johnson none of those really. Johnson was quicker over the ground, fearless, and until this season would have edged the decision about who was the more threatening going up for set pieces. This season, Huds has found that knack. If he could head every opportunity downwards like last night instead of over the bar, he'd easily get into double figures - he might still do this year. On balance, tough to chose. Before this season Johnson would have breezed it, now I'm not sure if Huds hasn't moved ahead for me
Hudsons goals and constant threat from set pieces are a huge asset. He's also been brilliant defensively this season. His recovery tackle on Richards yesterday when he swivelled after being wrong footed was one of the best bits of defending I've seen in ages. He very rarely gets exposed despite his lack of pace. Johnson has been fantastic and seemed to have the potential to be top half pl quality but his career has stalled terribly, being at the heart of 2 relegations on the bounce is not a stat any centre half should be proud of. On form you can't even compare the 2, Hudson is light years in front of him. I can't think of a better cb than our captain in the championship. I certainly don't think I'd swap him for anyone else in this division.
Huds was immense last night, it's the best I've seen him play. Does he read the board? I'm torn between Huds and Rog but will probably say Huds is the better all round player of the two.
Huds for me, Jones brought him back too early after injury and he had a bad few months but over the last 3 years has been the rock of our team.
Srengths and weaknesses for all of them. I think Gabbs and Ginge need to be considered as part of Siam's brader question. Gabbs wasn't as good a defender technically but made up for it in pace and was more similar to Rog where Ginge was a no nonsense defender like Huds. In terms of averall balance (bravery, reading the game, leadership and goals scored), I'd go for Huds of this season as he is now showing real consistency.
I'm a big fan of hudson this season, but my favourite performance from a defender in the last few seasons is paul quinn against leicester after gyepes' rugby tackle. Speaking of gyepes, he just scored for portsmouth.
