Sunderland to rekindle their interest in Hoilett
8:00am Wednesday 4th July 2012 in Sport By Scott Wilson

SUNDERLAND are set to rekindle their interest in Junior Hoilett after learning that the former Blackburn winger has cooled on a proposed move to Germany.

The Black Cats made an initial inquiry to Hoilett's representatives when he expressed a desire to leave Blackburn as a free agent at the start of the summer.

However, there was a deluge of interest in the 22-year-old and it looked as though a combination of high wage demands and a compensation fee would scupper Sunderland's hopes of signing him.

Borussia Monchengladbach were Hoilett's preferred destination at the time, but talks with the German club broke down towards the end of last month when the two parties were unable to agree personal terms.

Galatasaray have subsequently emerged as an alternative destination, but sources close to Hoilett claim he has become increasingly keen to remain in England.

Sunderland are aware of his change of heart, and Martin O'Neill is ready to make a renewed approach in an attempt to lure Hoilett to the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats boss will be working to a reasonably strict budget this summer, but with free agent Carlos Cuellar already on board, there is limited leeway to move closer to Hoilett's anticipated demands.

Blackburn have not given up hope of persuading the winger to sign a new deal at Ewood Park, but manager Steve Kean yesterday admitted Rovers are not in a strong position.

Kean said: "We find ourselves in not a great position with Junior Hoilett, who only signed a two-year contract when it should have been more a couple of years ago, but we are where we are. We're not sure how that will pan out."

Its that one bit that makes me shudder with these ITK jouros, yesterday the Journal said MON will be backed suggestion money to spend, now we are back to a strict budget.

I have a feeling none of them know a thing so every story can be taken with a pinch of salt.

Doesn't he play in the same position as McClean? He could play as a false number 10 but Sess plays there. Not sure what he could bring to the party that McClean hasn't already. McClean has progressed great this season. I'm not saying we shouldn't try for him because having players fighting for position is great.

Would be a superb signing, as a RW, or even a second AM in a really adventurous 4-3-2-1, a-la-Holland.

Team breakdown is not miles off.

    Mig (delighted with)
    Bardo - J O'Shea - Brown/Cuellar - OLSSON
    Seb -Colback - McLean
    HOILETT - Sess
    FLETCHER

That is a smashing side, even Jack as the DM has improved his passing and comfort on the ball incredibly in a year, that'd be a very nice, tidy team to watch, and would absolutely suit MON's favoured counter attacking system.

I don't buy this Mclean, Sess, Hoilett can't play in the same team. Appreciate we are million miles away from being Spain but if they can fit in Fabregas, Silva, Xavi & Inniesta and dominate world football, I think we should at least be looking at formations which allow us to control midfield, attack with flair and pace and be hard to score against and beat.
The days of 4-4-2 are over.

This may also be SAFC's downfall.

German clubs are very stricltly limited mate, and can only spend what they earn, Moenchengladbach won't get great TV & sponsorship, despite huge crowds and CL next season, as they have been ****e for years.

Casing point was the sale of Marco Reus, they simply couldn't offer anywhere close to what Dortmund could, so he went.

Hoilett will likely want 40-50k a week as a free agent, and I think we'd pay that.

I was thinking in terms of competing against some of these..

    Borussia Monchengladbach 2/1
    Sunderland 3/1
    Bayern Munich 4/1
    Tottenham 5/1
    Newcastle 6/1
    Arsenal 8/1
    Liverpool 10/1
    Bayer Leverkusen 20/1
    Wolfsburg 20/1
    Chelsea 28/1

    Some big hitters in there.

Fair pint on that, I'd be surprised if many were interested though, as all the sides on that list are well served right side.

would love it if we got the lad

he has pretty much played all his career on the left or playing off the striker like Sess does and if he came here it would be very interesting to see were he would play.

If we kept Sess I would imagine he would play on the right and it would be interesting to see how he does, the lad is naturally right footed so would give us much needed width and I would imagine he has a decent enough left foot so he will be able to come inside.

If Sess does go then I would play the lad in the Sess role linking the play between the midfield and striker and bring in Johnson on loan to play on the right.

We need to do all we can to get Hoilett and/or Johnson this summer, one would be absolutely fantastic, both would be the best summer business the club has done. If Sess does go which I hope is not the case and we get around 15m it will certainly be enough to fund the signings of these two and maybe enough left to go and get Hoilett's former team mate Martin Olsson to come in and play left back

Think he's going to a big club in Germany (which BM certainly want to achieve) or to us, or Spurs.
