Interesting statistics which show how the English league tables would look should previous success on the pitch be the only factor taken into consideration. It is from the end of the 2008/2009 season, but not a lot has changed in terms of the ranking since

By the way, Saints are placed 31st and Pompey (it pains me to say) are ranked 27th

    Based on previous history and current league position;

The two Sheffield teams are by far the biggest under-achievers at this moment in time - Currently in League 1, history suggests they should both be in the top tier (The Premier League)

Luton Town are the biggest under-achievers outside of the Football League - History suggests they should be in the 2nd tier (The Championship)

Overall, Wigan are by far the biggest over-achievers - Currently in the Premier League. Their previous success suggests that they should be in the 4th tier of English football (League Two) !!

    Points awarded as follows:

    Champions Cup Win +15
    Other European Trophy Win +10
    League Championship +10
    FA Cup Win +6
    League Cup Win +3
    Second Level Division Win +3
    Lower Division Win +1
    Season in top division +2
    Season in 2nd division +1
Bonuses: Super Cup; Club Cup; Double +1

I've seen some cruddy statistics before but this "devised by a scouser whilst seeking for definitive proof of being superior to Manchester United" calculation is hilarious. This just goes to show that you can always make statistics say whatever you like!

Must say, I find the parameters a little questionable myself.

I wonder if there's a table somewhere showing average league position (out of 92). Surely that would be a better indicator of a club's 'true' level

Equally dubious, but we're above Pompey.

Historical tables show details for all clubs ever to have played in the English football league since its inception in 1888. Club names have been changed to their current name where appropriate. Unless otherwise stated, points are given as defined in each season; i.e. 2 points for a win prior to 1981-82 and 3 points for a win thereafter.

And to be honest, that's pretty dodgy too. Look at the seasons that both Saints, Pompey and Others have spent in the Football League. Significantly less than most, because they were in the Southern League, which was on the same quality level prior to the 1920's, where Saints dominated for much of the time. Add those stats to the mix, and we might have something that is representative.

A team called Bootle should be in league 2 apparently!

Nothing personal Greg :emoticon-0105-wink: I just find the arbitrary allocation of "points" to certain achievements a little too simplistic. Plus it's an impossible calculation anyway! Tub thumping on past glories is all a bit cheesy anyway. You're only as good as your last two seasons I reckon (but then that's me at it now too!).
