I first saw the Floyd in 1966 at Eel Pie Island when they were a support band who hang a sheet behind the stage, and projected their light show onto it (back then this was totally new and nobody knew what the f*kk they were doing at the back with their projector, when they were setting it up). A bit different technology from where they ended up! But I loved them from the start as an 18 year old. But then I loved the Clash too Wubba!

Agree with that Wubba... I must admit that as a young man it was punk all the way for me, and that whole movement very much portrayed itself as being anti-Pink Floyd/prog rock. At the time the prog rock scene seemed to symbolize all the bad stuff Grove mentions (indulgent, middle-class, slow, ponderous etc), and if asked at the time I would have said (without having bothered to listen to any) that I hated Pink Floyd and all it stood for. It’s only later in life that I came to shake off my prejudices about them and revisit their catalogue. A lot of it (mainly the Roger Walters stuff to be honest) still leaves me cold, but in amongst Dark Side, Meddle, and some of the Syd Barrett stuff there’s some real gold to be found…. Or maybe I’m just getting old and prefer it quieter and slower…

If you think it's quieter and slower mate, may i suggest putting on One Of These Days and turning up the volume to full!By the way dropping a tab improves nearly every Floyd song by 50%,but it's not recomended for the faint-hearted.

<laugh> It's tempting, but I reckon if I did a tab now I'm in my middle years I'd end up a Syd Barrett/Peter Green-style basket case. I'll stick with the beers and The Pixies for now.

    DT you ol' grunger !!

I'd be moshin in the office if I hadn't had the beef wellington and a half bottle of claret for lunch.

BTW it was 21 years ago this year that I took a girl I was hoping to impress to see a grunge band called Nirvana at the Kilburn National Ballroom.

    Happy days

Interesting, I remember spending a 'lost' Saturday night listening to 'Ummagumma' in a mate's house which had really garish wallpaper which spent most of the night moving in mysterious ways, I had several attacks of the 'horrors, especially when listening to this:

Forget the speed, hear the quality!

These guys can really play. I saw them at Wembley many moons ago, it was an absolutely stunning concert from Shine on you Crazy Diamond through to Comfortably Numb, via the thread opening Hey You, Sorrow, Great Gig in the Sky, Another Brick, Wish you were here etc. etc. etc . I feel sorry for those who feel that they shouldn’t like Floyd, they are master craftsmen.

Have I done it the wrong way round then?

I spent my teenage years listening to nothing but REM and Radiohead followed by Pink Floyd and the Doors.

More recently, I've got into spikier stuff like the Pixies (check out a small, modern group called the Hickey Underworld BTW).

Never quite got punk though (I like Television though). That said, if any of you can get Radio Ulster (Virgin channel 932) then Mickey from the Undertones does a show on Thursdays at five past midnight that keeps my punk-loving missus enthralled.
