I've just been glancing through this thread on another forum and by god,we really are slipping behind clubs all over the country, they have new stadia, glistening stands and superstores and loads of them have got statues remembering and honouring heroes and legends from history.. What have we got, poor old Scotty running away from parked cars on the back of the Wedlock,a single tier shack for a shop at one entrance and a mobile hamburger joint welcoming us on the other, nothing for John Atyeo,Billy Wedlock or Gerry Gow,nothing not even a plack,it's a bloody humiliation and the club, not the fans, they can help, the club ought to do something about it post haste... http://www.footballforums.net/forums/showthread.php/286415-Statues-outside-your-ground
to be fair wiz, we havent accomplished anything yet, John ateyo would be the only player to have a statue outside the ground, if McInnes got us to the prem and got us as an established 1st tier team then we could get away with a statue, but we will have to wait and see
I know we are of an older generation shiny but in his day Big John was as big as Wayne Rooney to us and really was a one club man,he had transfer value worth £20m plus in todays money, look at the statue we have got down on the waterfront remembering the great man,it's typical of Bristol's attitude to our sporting heroes.. It's at the bottom of the wiki page on the right hand side... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Atyeo
The achievements of Atyeo and Bradford set them apart from all our other Bristol footballing heroes. If the new stadia come to pass then both should have statues outside the main entrances.
If we're filling the entry to our stadium now or a new one in the future, Alan Dicks also deserves consideration along with Atyeo, Wedlock, Gow, Merrick etc. And agree with Pirate about Geoff Bradford. Geoff was to Rovers what Big John was to City. A giant in every respect!
