On-loan Reds winger is impressing at Hull City in the Championship

Harry Wilson found himself stuck in the middle.

The Liverpool Under-23s captain consistently proved he was too good for life in Premier League 2 but securing a foothold in Jurgen Klopp's senior squad eluded him.

The Wales international needed something to bridge the gap. He needed to perform in more testing circumstances and show he could handle the physicality of life outside the Academy bubble.

The flying winger, who turns 21 next week, has done that with relish since joining Hull City on loan on deadline day in January.

It was a late decision by Klopp to sanction the deal at the end of the winter window. Liverpool had been inundated with offers but they would only let Wilson leave if he penned a new long-term contract.

Once the ink was dry, it was decided that Hull would be the best place for Wilson to continue his education. So far it's been massively beneficial for all parties.

Wilson, whose only first-team outing for Liverpool came in the FA Cup against Plymouth in January 2017, has played a starring role in dragging the Tigers nine points clear of the Championship relegation zone.

In five league appearances he has contributed three goals and two assists for Nigel Adkins' side. His involvement would have been greater but for the shoulder injury he suffered in their FA Cup clash with Chelsea last month.

Last Saturday he was Hull's matchwinner, skipping past a defender and hammering home the winner as they fought back from 3-1 down to beat Norwich City 4-3.

Wilson repeated the trick on Tuesday night as he arrived at the far post to volley home Ola Aina's cross from a tight angle in an emphatic 3-0 victory at Ipswich Town. It was a tricky finish made to look easy.

Loans don't always work out. They place young players out of their comfort zone and some struggle to handle it. But Wilson has embraced the challenge and is reaping the rewards.

He's currently outshining fellow rookie Liverpool wingers Sheyi Ojo and Ryan Kent, who are also playing in the Championship and trying to catch Klopp's eye.

The Reds boss wasn't a fan of the loan system when he first arrived in English football but over time he has learned to see the value of it. The gulf between under-23s football and the Premier League is far too great.

Wilson desperately needed a spell away from Liverpool in order to kick on. Now he's starting to fulfil that rich potential. This summer will be key to his chances of forcing his way into Klopp's plans.

But after being stuck in the middle for so long, he's now taking some decisive steps forward.

Look I like the kid. he's better imo than ryan kent by far as he has end product.

He can take a free and he has a bit of pace and a shot as well.

His issue is he's delicate. He's already been injured at hull and he's missed 2 or 3 chances at lfc due to injury.

I feel he's a snodgrass or maybe that type of player where he could do that tom ince has done but he's not going to make it with us due to that physicality.

Ok... maybe he is adam lallana at 20. he just gets injuries and set backs so can't do the intensity levels.

also the article is grossly unfair to ojo there. Ojo has been injured at fulham. it ignores wilson has missed 3 games for hull due to injury and is written cos he scored a belter and made 2 assists this week.

    IMO:

best of 3 today = wilson
    Most potential = ojo
    Best worker = wilson

Ryan kent with respect to the lad doesn't have an end product but klopp seemed to really like him in preseason. Wilson was injured. Klopps put ojo back of the queue due to work rate.

Klopp's message to all kids is the same. Work at 100% at all times. sprtin back, no jogging cos its easy. how me the level.

that said if i were wilson i'd be getting a move with a view to making myself a prem player in 2 years. A huddersfield or bournemouth move would be great for him mind. Championship is really hard to move to and find the right club where the manager won't be gone in 6 months.

The hardest workers at that age are frequently also the highest potential too! If they don't have the drive and ethic at that age they never will.

Yeah... ojo is a tough one. He came in with the whole giving it large mad hair and all that then seemed to have got the message at 16 that actually work is required, got a decent haircut, knuckled down to work and made an impression. Since he got injured the work rate has dropped off and he's gone form senior training to back to u23s and didn't get a sniff from klopp. This loan is to push the asset on imo and make some money.

Its very hard to know, he's got that eye that he has an end product but i don't think he's hungry enough either. Massive potential.

IMo wilson is easily as good as woodburn though more of an winger type but he could be adam lallana mark ii if he were to get chances.

I can see him moving on I like both welsh lads as players but its tough to come through... really is especially in forwards

Balotelli had great potential but no work ethic so he never materialises as anything good.

    Earn too much!!!

Far more than a job would pay them so most get too cocky for their own good.

Get away with it though which is a joke.

Right era to be a footballer I guess,

You have to find the players who love playing the game now and try and avoid the ones who think it's all about them or even worse the ones that just want to earn as much money as possible and be famous.

    Agreed.

most agents just want a quick killing off a guy unless he's really tipped for the big leagues.

They push young lads to demand 10k a week or whatever and secure themselves the pay day as a result

If i hihglight the curious case of sergi canos at LFC. Klopp actually gave this lad a chance in 2015/16 he was looking for 10k a week and we were offering 4k.

he faffed off to norwich cos we didn't let his contract run out but he flopped so went to brentford where he was on loan.

    Has done "ok"

family run an resturant in liverpool.

now.... i'm not saying he was any good or was making it but..... did he get his big wages at norwich? or brentford?

at 21 he's now found himself having left spain (he rejected several moves to go to barca first) he joins us at 16 on a scholarhsip chasing the cash. family comes so thats barca over like... well done. now has ended up at 21 in brentford safely midtable.

Right moves along the way? hmmmmmm...

    I agree about cockyness.

there is a reason why shopping in Africa and such places is popular.

Its not just for cheap players at outset. its for players who will do anything to succeed (and yes these days that leaves them open to exploitation.)

yeah.... hungry and mean and will walk all over an opponent.

kids that grow up in 1st world and rich kids just dont have it. imo just dont.

the desire to succeed is huge. if a young lad with an iphone can sit on his arse at 12 he will while the other lad is out working on it. just the way of things.
