It is this time of the year again and it seems they are going for that tactic again, Trialists, and loads of them I bet. Gills: Pre-Season Training Begins The Gills first-team squad has begun pre-season training ahead of the new campaign. But with still no new confirmed signings at the club, it is expected to be a small group which has converged at Beechings Cross this morning. Given that manager Andy Hessenthaler's main reason for an earlier return to training was a bid to 'hit the ground running', the lack of transfer activity at the club so far seems to be in contradiction to that plan. The Gills do have a vast number of friendlies organised, the first of which is at Ashford United on Wednesday of next week. It is anticipated that some new signings will be announced by then with contracts elsewhere expiring on Thursday, but a number of trialists will also get the chance to win a deal at Priestfield. Last year Tony Sinclair, Stanley Aborah and Lance Cronin won deals after impressing in pre-season, and assistant boss Ian Hendon insists there will be a chance for more to follow them this summer. He told KentOnline: 'We`ll have a few trialists in but not loads and loads. If I`m honest, we had every Tom, Dick and Harry along last year and we are definitely going to be more selective this year. 'If they come with a good reputation, then we`ll take a look at them but we won`t just be looking at anybody. 'One day last year we had 44 players in for a pre-season training session and had to split them into four groups of 11. 'Out of those we didn`t take too many but we`ve got an idea what we want this year. 'We`re not planning on having 44 players in again, it was different last year as we had only just come into the club.' Grab your boots they may wanna see what everyone has got LOL.
I suppose we have to let some trialist have a go. Who knows we may uncover a gem! However Sinclair, Cronin and Aborah don't seem to support by point!
It's not my boots that I am worried about. Do Gills provide shorts, size 46" waist, together with some vaseline and a tyre lever to get them on with? With an oxygen tank strapped to my back I feel that I am in with a chance.
The one promising triallist that I saw last season was Stanley Aborah and we wouldn't sign him. Also Cronin wasn't signed after being a triallist.Hess snapped him up as soon as Ebbsfleet released him.
