Rest in Peace world cup hero https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/47196017 England's 1966 World Cup-winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks has died aged 81.
when I was a kid of 10 years, we played football in the streets, everyone wanted to be Bobby Charlton and score goals but at least we had the knowledge we could be Gordon Banks if we had to go in goal
RIP. Greatest English Keeper. When you consider the way Knighthoods are thrown around like confetti, its a disgrace that he was not honoured.
I don't think knighthoods have ever meant anything to be honest, a great testament of a man is the reaction when he dies, and I think there have been some great tributes to Gordon. Too young to have seen him or had knowledge beyond the one repeated clip and the fact he won the World cup, but I've enjoyed some of the stories on the radio and the tribute tv programmes. It's easy to think that footballers now are at peak levels of talent and fitness etc because of the money and sparkle in the presentation of the game... But the quality of footballer really hasn't improved much at all. If you were a worldie then, you'd be a worldie now.
