I was in Fopp this morning browsing and saw that Jerry Lee Lewis had recorded Goodnight Irene. Got me thinking that we could put together a compilation of favourite, rare and popular versions of one of the most well-known football club anthems in the whole bluddy world! For starters here's Jerry Lee Lewis aided and abetted by Van Morrison: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmvCAzLseu8
I still am not keen on Leadbelly's version. Hate to say I remember its popularity in the late forties. I must say I prefer the more upbeat version by Jerry Lee Lewis and Van Mprrison. Perhaps the ****ry style had something to do with marrying a thirteen year old cousin! Amongst other perculiar weddings.
thought it was some old saying <running.away.quick> EDIT...wot?..something like F.O.Please.(insert name beginning with P)

82ers talking about adding a version of irene to our thread but not done so yet, so on their behalf and out of interest of fairness and it is pretty funny (but crap)....
Tom Jones is a big fan of the song and has performed it on Later with Jools. Brian Ferry's recorded a great version, and I've got a version recorded by Michelle Shocked too. There a so many different versions that a complilation album is a cracking idea for the generation that still buys albums. Otherwise you can call up the song title on any of these download websites and take your pick. How about a vote on your favourite version?

An obscure version here by the Springfields...with the lovely Dusty (Actually I don't like it, but it's an interesting rarity) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubu_ShSXDvY
