With all the doom and gloom amongst us at present I'd like to get your memories of that great season 1975-76 when our best ever side just missed out on the ultimate prize. For me the abiding memory was being squashed sardine like in the corner of the loft at the Leeds match which we won nerve-wrackingly with goals from Dave Thomas, a header no less! and a sublime finish from Stanley. Other great moments were the opening game beating Liverpool comprehensively 2-0, the 5-1 win at Derby without McLintock & Webb, a great 5-0 win over Everton, an amazing late win against Stoke and a comeback win against Middlesbrough. The lesser moments were an unbelievable 0-0 draw at Sheffield Utd who were bottom, we hit the woodwork at least 5 times, a League Cup defeat at home to Newcastle who also put us out of the FA Cup in a replay that we totally dominated from start to finish, and that awful Easter Saturday at Norwich. What are your memories of that season?
My most vivid memory is that wait following the Leeds victory, to the evening that Liverpool played Wolves. Liverpool needed the win to deny us the title & Wolves needed the points to stay up. I remember going to the off licence to get a few beers, then listened to the game on the radio. Wolves scored first to raise our hopes, then Liverpool scored three without reply to leave myself & all R's fans utterly dejected. We played some fantastic football that season, & I feel very fortunate to have witnessed it.
The Norwich game that cost us the prizs! If you remember the goal that done us? Ball kicked out ,hit one of there players and came right back into our goal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The best , seeing that `big club` Leeds off! Yes, great days, as I have said before ,we will never see the likes again! Great team, great manager.
Before my time I'm afraid though I've just watched the season DVD with my old man. When you seen Francis' goal in that 1st game v L'pool, did any of you think it would win goal of the season?
