A player or manager is linked with another club and you read a quote that says, "he's going nowhere" or "he's not for sale".

As you're about to find out, this counts for very little in modern football, which is bad news for Spurs fans after chairman Daniel Levy's statement about Luka Modric.

Here are ten examples of players or managers we were lied to about when told: "He's going nowhere!"

    Wayne Rooney... IS GOING NOWHERE!

On 20 June 2004, Everton chairman Bill Kenwright says: "David Moyes and I agreed Wayne has to be a £50million player now. "I would turn down any bid for him and say: 'Thank you very much. What else do you want to talk about?'"

On 31 August 2004, Man United sign Wayne Rooney for £27m.

RUUD VAN NISTLEROOY... IS GOING NOWHERE!

On 3 October 2005, the Dutchman's agent Rodger Linse says: "Ruud is happy at Manchester United. As a matter of fact he is in the process of buying a house in Manchester. Previously he had rented in England but now he's buying somewhere. Why would he buy a house if he wants to leave the club? It is just ridiculous."

On 27 July 2006, Ruud van Nistlerooy joins Real Madrid for £10.3m.

    Shay Given... IS GOING NOWHERE!

On 31 December 2008, Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear says: "He won't be leaving - he has no interest in that whatsoever. He loves the football club - he's part of the city and that suits us because he's a world-class goalkeeper."

On 1 February 2009, Shay Given joins Man City for an undisclosed fee.

    CRISTIANO RONALDO... IS GOING NOWHERE!

On 19 May 2009, Man United chief executive David Gill says: "Cristiano Ronaldo is not for sale. He's a great player, and he's part of our club."

On 26 June 2009, Real Madrid sign Cristiano Ronaldo for £80m.

    Kenwyne Jones... IS GOING NOWHERE!

On 8 January 2010, Sunderland boss Steve Bruce says: "Kenwyne Jones is an important part of our team and he isn’t going anywhere. “I’m trying to build a squad that can compete here at Sunderland and I want quality players like Kenwyne Jones at the club."

On 11 August 2010, Stoke sign Kenwyne Jones for £8m.

    ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC... IS GOING NOWHERE!

On 20 May 2010, Barcelona president Joan Laporta says: "Ibra is not for sale. He is a very highly-valued player, and I know the coaches count on him. The signing of Villa does not affect the future of Ibra."

On 28 August 2010, Zlatan Ibrahimović joins AC Milan, initially on loan and later permanently for £21m.

    Andy Carroll... IS GOING NOWEHERE!

On 17 January 2011, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew says: “They can put together whatever they like. He is not for sale. I am going to say it for one last time, he is not for sale.”

On 31 January 2011, Liverpool sign Andy Carroll for £35m.

    Fernando Torres... IS GOING NOWHERE!

On 28 January 2011, Liverpool release a statement which says: "Chelsea have made a bid for Fernando which has been turned down, the player is not for sale."

On 31 January 2011, Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish says: "With regards to Fernando, it's the same as what the club statement was two or three days ago, we will stick to that and we won't be adding to that."

On 31 January 2011, Fernando Torres joined Chelsea for £50m.

    MARK HUGHES... IS GOING NOWHERE!

On 11 May 2011, Fulham boss Mark Hughes says: “I am very happy at Craven Cottage and am looking forward enormously to building on what we have achieved this season. I enjoy a good relationship with the owner, management, players and supporters of Fulham Football Club and look forward to continuing that relationship next season.”

On 2 June 2011, Mark Hughes says: "As a young, ambitious manager I wish to move on to further my experiences."

    BILLY DAVIES... IS GOING NOWHERE!

On 16 May 2011, Billy Davies says: "Let me make it clear - 100% clear - that my agreement with this board was three-and-a-half years to get this club out of this division, I'm planning on going nowhere."

On 12 June 2011, Billy Davies is sacked and replaced by Steve McClaren.

This got me thinking about SNQ's statement... Never say those words...

I think its just a ploy to get as much money as possible from the buying club as it shows how important the player is to the selling club and it may force the price up by a few million, so lets hope Mc'Cartney is GOING NOWHERE!
