So we are getting a giant screen which sounds pretty big! The cynic in me thinks what SD advertising will now be strategically placed around this to maximise his free marketing.

Newcastle United announced today that they are to install a giant screen at St. James’ Park.

The 60m LED screen, manufactured by sports technology specialists ADI, will be situated on the glass panelling in the north east corner of the stadium in the Leazes end and will be visible to over 40,000 spectators on matchdays.

At 60m, it will be the joint biggest screen in the Premier League and will be up and running for United’s home fixture with Leicester City on 18 October.

The new screen will utilise ADI’s Virtuality 10mm LED technology and will broadcast exclusive club content, live match action, instant replays, statistics, news, and much more to deliver an engaging fan experience.

The new digital platform also provides the club’s commercial partners with a new means of communication with fans within the stadium – complementing the clubs matchday coverage.

United’s Managing Director Lee Charnley said:

“We have wanted such a facility for a long time now and we’re delighted to have joined forces with ADI to install this state-of-the-art giant screen within St. James’ Park.

“It will significantly improve the matchday experience for supporters and greatly enhance the interactivity and information we can provide to them at the stadium before, during and after the game. The north east corner on the stadium was the optimum location where the positioning of such a large screen was structurally possible, whilst at the same time providing a sight line for the majority of supporters.”

ADI’s Commercial Manager for Sport, Sharon Smith, said:

“We’re incredibly excited to be working with Newcastle United to deliver a platform that not only creates incredible fan engagement opportunity but also drives commercial revenue. With more than 30 LED displays now installed at sports venues across the UK we’re delighted to be serving St. James’ Park and we look forward to working with the club to add value to the match day experience.”

<laugh> The exact thing I was thinking. Even more garish Sports Direct advertising to abuse our eyes. We'll also no doubt be kept well (mis)informed as to how very expensive it was to install, sadly leaving us little to spend in the next transfer window. I seem to remember something similar happening a few years ago with an extremely costly drainage system and bore-hole at the the training ground... Half of the Andy Carroll money well spent.

About time we got a screen.
Looks a fair old size one from what you can tell on the mock-up.

Wonder if it will obstruct the view to some extent if you're in the Leazes End.

suppose if you're that close to it
all you would see is pixelated dots flashing infront of your eyes
and if anyone has a medical condition with shinning lights etc
you would be better off moving your seat

It's to get the full effect of ACS mooning in Fenwick's window - a smaller screen wouldn't do it justice.

I'm pretty sure it's for the Rugby League World Cup - Stadiums need a screen to review decisions
